p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Carrying an A7C Off Road (mountain biking and motorcycling)

I've found (over several years and several broken cameras), that the best way to carry a point + shoot camera is to wear it in a case attached to the front left strap of my camelback.

Question -- does anyone have any recommendations on how to carry a slightly larger camera (A7C with a compact 24mm f/2.8 lens)?

Thanks

I use a third part bladder in a back pack on road cycling, then with waterproofs and a few things for the cold my A7R2 and Tamron Adaptall-2 SP bricks 24-48mm and 60-300mm are nicely padded, I cycled round Sicily with no damage.

What's the cause of the breaks? Falls or general banging around?
I carry a Nex6 or an a6300 with a couple of adapted MF lenses in the bottom section of a Thinktank Ultralite Sprint 16L. No problems so far. With the camera in the bag there is no fast/ready access mind you.

I carry my A7RIII or A7c either in a Pacsafe Vibe 100 or attached to the straps of my backpack with a Spider X Backpacker Kit.
I often combine the Packsafe Vibe 100 with my Mindshift backpacks.

In addition, I always use this wrist strap https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B088J3CG4T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) so that the camera doesn't fall out of my hand.
Sometimes I also carry the A7c with a light lens on my wrist for some hours.

I also have a Spider Pro Dual Camera Holster. I only use it for weddings, although it could also be useful outside in nature.

Maybe you mountain bike differently than I did. I would not take anything but a cheap P&S for it. I just couldn't guarantee I wouldn't get it wet (creek and stream fording), take pretty big impacts (3+ feet), or just plain old wreck (more ambition than sense) on a daily basis.

I use a Pelican Storm 2050 for canyoneering, big climbs, biking, or whatever when I want a full size camera. It is very tight but does fit an R3 or A9 with the new 1.8" lenses. The setup has no problem with short swims, throwing packs 20+ feet onto rock, crashing a bike, etc.

Downside is the full case is big and heavy enough to be quite annoying, and you've still only got one lens with pretty limited lens options. Probably it has space to sneak in one more. I haven't tried.

The Ricoh GR3 plus pelican personal G40 is a perfect fit and much more convenient but obviously 28mm only.

Lowepro Dashpoint 30 might work. I see people on Amazon's reviews stating the A6000 series fits with the 16-50 kit lens, so the Samyang 24 might work being only a few mm longer.

But check out the Thinktank Mindshift Rotation backpacks. I have the discontinued Trail bag (16L) and the 34L and love them. These are great for quick access and then stowing away the camera. Much safer and more comfortable than having a bag like the Dashpoint strapped to your waist.

Yeah I used to do all sorts of silly stuff on mtb's, those days are mostly done tho:

I've only broken one from a crash, that was in my backpack and I landed on it.

I think I killed both of my XF1s from vibration:

The first one was carried in the tank bag of my motorcycle, it didn't survive long there. That was a $200 lesson.

The second one was carried in a small camera case that I attached to my left front camelback strap. It lasted years that way, thru many crashes and lots of miles. It eventually died as well.

I have found the same thing - when the camera is in my backpack I don't end up taking many photos. When it is easily accessible on my camelback strap, then it gets used 10x more.

1. A smallish camera with a compact lens should work with a Peak Design Capture Clip on the front left strap of your present pack.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1372683-REG/peak_design_cp_bk_3_capture_camera_clip_black.html

I use a Peak Design Capture Clip with my A7R III and relatively compact lenses (e.g., a Voigtlander 50mm APO), but that solution might leave your gear somewhat exposed to the elements--so you could cover it with a 1/2 oz stuff sack.

2. A simple pouch with a waist strap (and, optionally, also with a shoulder strap) could hold your camera with minimal shifting and bouncing while you ride.

Too much information:

I poked around online and at REI as I looked for a small pack that I could wear at my waist or at my side to supplement a day pack. Although there are many nice small lumbar packs, I didn't find a solution that appealed to me (in part because some of the packs, when worn in front or at the side, position the buckle in ways that don't play well with another pack. A simple pouch that stabilized the camera via a waist belt while it shared the load with an over-the-shoulder camera strap worked for me during a recent walking and climbing (but not riding) trip to the dusty eastern Sierra Nevada.

A large Zing neoprene pouch held my camera and should hold yours; it has loops that allow attaching a simple waist strap, as well as (higher set) webbing loops that allow it to be attached to a camera strap, such that the camera is supported by both the shoulder strap and the waist belt. (I ended up also clipping the camera's wrist loop to the toy 'biner that also partially supported the pouch via the waist strap--no broken camera for me.) You could clip the camera and/or the pouch to your pack's strap to hold it in position at your side, if you wish.

For my road/grravel biking I use a Mettle Speedstrap - works great with a "smallish"¸lens on my a7RII/IV (CV 3.5/21mm) but with the bigger lenses (CV 1.2/40mm) is not that great. I am looking into getting a used 28-60mm for this reason.

https://www.mettlecycling.com/thegoods/mettle-speed-strap-pre-order

I got this a couple of years now and now I am thinking of getting their slow strap (wasn`t available when I got the speed strap) which holds your camera more securely on your back.

Cheers, A.

Now that I'm older I'm on a motorcycle more often than a mtb.

Now the problem is that when I visit an amazing place I just end up with craptastic cell phone photos. Think of how much better these could have been had I been carrying a real camera:

I think they're damn good just as they are

I have a similar issue though. I like to take my camera on a Jet Ski. I leave it in the front compartment in a small Lowepro Case. It gets beat to hell inside there when we are going fast, and the water is rough. I wound up buying a used Panasonic Lumix LX100 II... and I worry every time I take it out I paid around $600.00 for it... I wouldn't be happy if it got damaged, but not the end of the world.

So far so good...

A Cotton Carrier may work for you...the only thing I would be leery about would be crashes, I saw some armored plates that sit behind the camera to protect your sternum from impact of the camera against your chest.

Another vote for the cotton carrier. I don't mt bike but where I hike I'm sometimes on all fours.

Best bag to carry an A7c while biking is the Kata - LighTri-312DL.

It's discontinued, but if you can find one It's definitely worth it!
