The speed of these animals is insane. Here, you'll see this long tail weasel chasing a fly. I had absolutely no clue what I had shot until looking at the sequence on the PC.

For those who are curious, yes he did catch it.

Great shot, Mike ... especially at 1000mm! Heck, I have so much trouble tracking/keeping him in the frame at 500mm w/o chopping off any part of his body!

Surprisingly, I got better results with the 2x and 1.4x than base 500mm. Not sure if that was due to the AF getting more detail to lock on to with a bigger target, or if the setups just gave me more opportunities being the little guy would be in and out of range of the 500mm quite a bit.

Surprisingly, the focal length seems to have very little hindrance in terms of AF. The only issue I feel matters now is, whether you are capable of finding the subject at that focal length in the EVF. But, I'll be blunt... there's no way this shot happens with one of my DSLRs at that focal length.

, in So Cal, its tough to find anything other than birds, coyotes, and squirrels. I'll take it just about anything willing to let me within range. But yes, this set of weasels were a welcome surprise this year.

Ah Ha ... you probably missed the red foxes and their kitties in the Spring of 2020.

And we do have a lot of mountain lions and bears ... like this one.

When I first saw that video all I could do is cringe... attacking a black bear mom with cubs in tow. Lucky kid.

Yeah the foxes are nearly a guarantee in their mating season, but the mountain lions and bears are highly elusive. I've seen 1 mountain lion in 35'ish years of photography and mountain biking and never a bear, even though they are around.

Also, bobcats are everywhere, but again extremely difficult to locate. So if you stay in So Cal, you're mostly sticking to the birds. Luckily, there are a ton to choose from.
