| p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Male Pileated Woodpecker Feeding Chicks and in Flight | |
Pa Pileated flies to his nest to feed his chicks. Unfortunately, he is now a single father, as Ma mysteriously disappeared about 2 weeks before the chicks fledged. The general consensus within the local residents/observers is that she was taken by one of the resident owls or coyotes. 😰 To his credit, Pa has really stepped up and returns to the nest every 30 minutes to an hour to feed his 4 (3 males and 1 female) chicks. This particular park was difficult to shoot, as there was a Great Horned Owl nest, a Barred Owl not nesting, 2x Anna's Hummingbird nest, Rufous Hummingbird nest, Robin nest, Northern Flicker nest, Pileated nest, Black-Capped Chickadee nest & a Chestnut-Backed Chickadee nest...I didn't know where to go! I managed to keep most of them a secret, but this Pileated nest got popular, as other people found it too.
Pa briefly stops on a nearby tree before flying to his nest.
