p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Weaseled my way in into capturing some fast actions

Congratulations to AGeoJO for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 18 votes - View Previous Winners

When I first captured some weasel actions, I really thought 1/2000sec would be sufficient to do so. To may surprise, the fast weasel speed resulted in some blurriness due to the fast movement, which would be fine for the hind part but not for the head/eyes. Plus, the lighting was a tad too harsh that morning. So, I went out there again the second time around on an overcast morning according to the weather forecast.

From time to time, the weasel would stop in its track for a brief period before taking off again. Although the difference in ISO as the result between 1/2000 sec and 1/4000 sec is not that dramatic but every little bit would maximize the output. So, I setup my gear to change the shutter speed instantaneously by pushing a different AF button. In other words, I would like to use 1/4000 sec to capture the movement and 1/2000 sec for when the weasel stayed semi-stationary. In hindsight, I should have set the second shutter speed to 1/1000 sec. Oh, well, I am not going back there for a 3rd time . The speed drive was 15fps for the moving weasel images.

Thank you for stopping by and please, feel free to leave a feedback,
Joshua

Joshua - Incredible, just incredible! I know how fast these guys move and dart around so to catch the action as you did is a showcase of your skills. Well done! Already looking forward to seeing what you catch on your third trip.

Greg, thank you very much for your kind words. Something that my better half couldn’t understand that there is a need to go out more than just once to capture the same creatures…

Thank you very much, Bobby! Unless you bring your own gopher, I wouldn’t be going out there that soon .

Very nice, reacting fast enough for those first couple of strides is very tough. Good work.

Thank you very much, Mike! To be honest, I raised my position somewhat the second time around to minimize the camera from grabbing focus on those contrasty vegetation in the foreground. And there are a lot of them. It happened too often previously and I couldn’t blame the gear; it is designed to do just that. A short crouching stool was fine for this old guy to be more comfortable; my knees would have complained otherwise.
