Based on my observations, chipmunks are oblivious to the danger that cats are to them, and so, they're an easy kill for a cat.
Several days ago, this little one appeared on the ground below my bird feeder. I am determined to keep it around. So, my cat just became in indoor cat (for awhile anyway, while I observe it). Some might think that this is mean to the cat. Honestly, I treat my cat like gold. I have been (and will be) watching him closely to see how this effects him too. The window at one of his beds, is now open and screened.
And I should add this: I was away all of last March and a friend frequently cared for my cat. After returning, I began to notice that my cat was happy to just sit in the window and watch the birds, not once indicating to me that he wanted out.
One thing is certain, with my cat outside, this Chipmunk would have been killed within the last several days. I know this from the fate of the last one that decided to fill its pouch each day below the bird feeder.
