p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · An osprey story

This story takes place in Oceanside, New York at the Marine Nature Study Area, one of Long Island's gems.

-1 Male osprey has eaten the head and is bringing the body and tail back for it's mate who is egg sitting

https://www.morrisaltman.com/img/s/v-10/p2491096407-6.jpg

-2 Male looks out over the world as the female eats

https://www.morrisaltman.com/img/s/v-10/p2491096123-6.jpg

-3 Female takes off with meal leaving the male to care for the eggs

https://www.morrisaltman.com/img/s/v-10/p2491095604-6.jpg

-4 Female accelerating away from the nest

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Nice Morris. I have seen that behavior before. I wonder why they always eat the head before sharing. Do you think it is the best part or that they are saving the best part for their mate?

There seems to be a few different theories on that. The head being the best part is one of them but it's not clear if that's accurate. The one that makes the most sense to me is eating the head is the quickest way to kill the fish. This prevents the fish from thrashing around in the nest and harming the chicks.
Nice shots morris !

Nice work on these, Morris. I've heard that brains and scrambled eggs are savored by some.

Excellent sequence of images, Morris! Is that common that the female does not consume the meal that the partner brought back right there in the nest?

Great set, Morris. I have observed all the behavior you mentioned in the story as I do a fair amount of osprey photography myself. Great story and images.

Thank you Phil,
I think it's simply the easiest part to get to as they hold the fish in it's talons

Thank you Joshua,
This is a very strange pare. The male is a klutz and the female much older. This is there third year together and have failed to raise any chicks the past two years. We are hoping they do better this year. I've seen them share in the nest, I suspect they were not getting along well this day.

My pet theory is that they get rid of the head to get rid of the guts so they don't have to stinky leftovers in their nest.

Nice shots Morris.
