p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Spring Blossom Portraits

Spring time is here in Colorado and we've had the typical ups and downs in weather. Snow one day, and in the 60s and 70s two days later. We did an evening Spring Blossom shoot in Denver City Park with a couple of models and I'm sharing a couple of images of Sacha and Jaimi here. All shot with the Nikon Z5 and Voigtlander 50 f1.2 VM. Feedback is very welcome!

I am a narrow DOF junkie, but I think there is a bit much going on in the foreground.

Great colors and venue, and exposures seem to be good (although #3 seems a bit hot for my taste).

~but~ be careful of falling into the, "every expression should be sultry and borderline pissed-off" look. All too common. Flowers and good weather are reasons to SMILE

White stripe behind her head in last one is a distraction.

Hard to tell with these small images, but eye seem soft on most of them.

+1 for much of g.

Piggyback on g, the amount of oof in the frames are carrying a lot of mass, compared to the mass given for the model, competing kinda strongly at times. Might explore if some different crops can shift that weighting a bit. I looked at some really deep crops (below the shoulder on Sacha, at the wrist on Jaimi), essentially becoming head shots and the vibe changes the engagement with them.

As to the expressions, they do look a bit forced / contrived, with facial tension still in them. It's as if the models are trying hard to be somebody they're not. Of course, with models ... a subject unto itself ... finding that connection can be better on some days that others. Here, they just don't seem to have reached that "relaxed" point where the facial tension is gone just yet. Sometimes it takes a bit longer to get them there, and that facial tension (not to be confused with expression) to be relieved ... it's a nuance, but a worthy one to endeavor, imo.

Some models know how to get themselves there. Others, need the photographer to know how to get them there.

That said, looks you you had a good time working with the blossoms for framing, etc.

I think the tighter crops (that I played with) reveal ... just how nicely ... you used the blossoms for framing. These wider views don't do it justice, imo. I'd suggest going in super tight to just the eyes / mouth ... and slowly working your way back out. There seems to come a point where the blossom framing shifts from framing to competing subject. Stay inside that and I think you bring these to their max ... essentially using the crop to shift from a 50mm to something longer-ish and really harness that blossom framing you were so carefully attentive to.

Thanks for the feedback! Looking at these again I agree that tighter crops may be more powerful.

On the expression - these models like that look for Instagram, lol . I usually also capture smiles, which I personally prefer as well. Didn't post those here.

Good feedback on the white stripe!

I honestly don't know how I can get the eyes sharper using these manual lenses / manual focus and keeping in the flow of a shoot like these. They look plenty sharp to me, but possibly not as sharp as modern auto-focus lenses. It may be a trade-off.

Thanks for the detailed feedback, much appreciated! I agree with the comments. The tighter framing really makes these images pop more!

I work with these models quite a bit and I have lots of very nice, relaxed smiling images as well. ... they seem to prefer these type of looks for their Instagram feed, lol.

Including a tighter crop of one of the images. Also adding some smiling/relaxed faces from the same shoot

Late to the party here, but agree with greg. My first two impressions were the excessive foreground blurring and the facial expressions.

The foreground blurring in the 3rd from last shot is about right. (See how numbering them would help?)

My own cherry trees have just come out much like these and finding good framing to present them is not always easy.
