p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Shutter setting for BIF

I posted this question on the Sony forum as well. Just looking for advice from the more dedicated and experienced wildlife photographers about which shutter to use on my A7R4 for BIF and other wildlife. Today I was out shooting birds flying around and had my camera (Sony A7R4 with 100-400 GM lens) set to use the electronic first curtain. The shutter was set at between 1/1300 and 1/2000 for most shots. My question is simple this, for those who shoot wildlife with long lenses, what shutter option is most frequently used, and why do you use it for wildlife and BIF?

OP is referring to the Sony Alpha Forum, not this one.

Wide open on my 200-600 is not the best, I've found that stopping down a little seems to give sharper results, that means bumping up the shutter speed. I like to have minimum shutter at 1/2000, I can clean up noise from higher ISO using Topaz DeNoise.

Yes, EFCS on is a good idea. There are no issues using it with this lens and without there is a noticable delay when shooting in order to close the mechanical front curtain.

flying birds especially with high megapixel bodies: 1/2500 sec minimum; 1/3200 or faster to be safe - particularly with small fast flyers (shorebirds)

soaring raptors and other slow flying birds...you might get away with 1/2000 sec if you shoot in bursts - so that one frame out of several is tack sharp

it also depends upon how critical you are of images...do you want wing tips frozen and sharp in small fast birds?

sometimes a bit of blur can enhance an image; sometimes not...

Also, if I may ask. Do any of you turn off IBIS when shooting high shutter speeds with the RIV and 100-400?

Personally no, I think that this thing of turning of OSS/IBIS in modern lenses is well overdue by now, stabilization systems are supposedly "intelligent" enough now to not hamper IQ, even shooting on a tripod.
