Canon took the easy way out with those big white lenses. They should have announced an EF to RF lens mount conversion via CPS at the same time.

Hmmmmmm....looks like the EF versions of the 400 and 600 are more versatile. Use them on a DSLR, MILC, Sony, etc...

RF can only be used on RF correct?

If I had a choice right now I would pick the EF 400III or 600III considering they?re the exact same lens other than the mount.

"Optically identical to the super telephoto EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM lens, the RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens from Canon delivers high-performance results and is a go-to choice for capturing professional-quality shots of sports, wildlife, and more"

I guess the 400 and 600 make sense to the type that really just want the better weather sealing of a closed system lens without an adapter.

I am kind of surprised Canon did not update the AF motors.

I ordered the EF400, seems more flexible. If they had updated the motors or the IS so that it works "+", sure, but as is, I don't see a point.

Looks like they just screwed a silver adapter in place of the EF mount. Maybe it’s not as weather sealed as we’d hope.

I just sold my 200-400/4 but I would have kept it if Canon had an EF to RF mount update program. I guess they’re hungry for $$$.

Just curious, is there a problem with using the adapters on the 200-400?

I guess the main reason for releasing these is to phase out ef glass as soon as possible to prevent it from being adapted on other brands.

While a typical user of super tele might not want to use an adapted lens long term, there’s no cost to try out a mirrorless body from sony or nikon. If instead you need to buy the glass as well then it puts a much higher barrier to switch.

No issue at all. I adapted it on the EOS R and R5

If someone doesn't use Canon DSLRs, and uses RF mount cameras then it makes sense to get native lenses for the system one is using. The adapter can add a point of vulnerability by adding another layer of electrical contacts between the camera and lens.

It's possible that the new 400 mm and 600 mm lenses, despite being optically the same as the latest EF versions, use the RF electrical interface with faster communication between camera and body. This could improve the precision of the AF a bit. Once the lenses are out, I am sure some will be able to test the performance between the two. New motors were developed for the EF IS III versions and are only a few years old, it may still be the best technology they have for such lenses.

I wonder how the 600RF will look with a 2XTC on and the weight balance of that combo, since the added mount will push the weight further away from the body. That silver mount looks odd.

Its not going to be any different than when I put the 2x on with the regular EF to RF adapter with my R5 and 600 III, the weight and balance are great.

I can't believe the CAD price went up $3000-$3200 on these lenses while the USD price stayed the same. The CAD has appreciated significantly over the USD since the time the EF IIIs were announced. I can order the 600RF from B&H and pay ~ $17,500 CAD (maybe as high as $18,000 with VISA exchange rate) vs $20,000 CAD if I buy in Canada.

I guess we will see if the listed retailer price is lower as it sometimes is.

All of this discussion about the two big white lenses that are the same lenses as their EF counterpart with a different mount...not even a control ring.

Meanwhile, the 100L Macro has some genuinely great features (an AF lens greater than 1:1 macro, SA control, dual USM motors should make it focus brilliantly. Sample images show almost no CA...) Seems to be a real winner. Don't know if I feel up to spending $1,400 on it, but it's something that will likely eventually end up in my bag, and is by far the most exciting thing announced this morning.

It seems Canon hasn't shown the block diagram for this yet, and it has the same elements and groups as the EF version, but I don't think they are the same optics, given the lack of CA in the sample images and the improved MTF. Looking at the MTF charts, the RF version looks to be notably better in the corners, and reasonably better over the entire frame from wide open. The new MTFs only show wide open, while the old ones show wide open and f/8, so we can't compare at f/8, but the wide open MTFs show better overall resolution and less astigmatism as well, so hopefully some nice tweaks to the optics there.

My thoughts exactly. My current 100L is in near new condition and is serving me well, but the new one will end up in my bag in several years. It looks to be a worthy improvement.

IMO, they didn't do themselves (or their customers) any favors with their aesthetic design choices, either. That silver adapter-looking part of it makes it stand out that you could just be using an EF lens with that adapter right there.

While I agree it's not aesthetically pleasing and a bit odd of a choice, the truth is most will look like this (or similar) within the first day it arrives at their door step. So it's not really an issue at the end of the day.
It just looks funny when naked. Sorta like I do.

Replace that last bit of camo tape on the end with some silver tape and slightly modify the "E" in EF. Scratch out the bottom horizontal and paint in a top vertical and you've got yourself an RF!

Depends on what your provinces PST/HST tax rates are. Albertans save 1658.09 as we don't have a PST/HST.

I agree with Geoff Canada Canada's MSRP is over priced fo Canadians, and Canon may find Canadians will once more start buying from US Dealers instead of Canadian, much like happened several years ago.
