p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Rajasthani Children

These are pictures of Rajasthani children living in an encampment not far from where I live. I used a Helios-40 85mm at f1.7. I am starting to develop a certain "look" with this lens. I like the vintage quality of the colors and the graduated blur. Please click on the pictures for a more pleasing rendition.

All three are good shots. I particularly like the way the 3rd one turned out. Normally I might critique the soft focus, but I think it works well for portraits of children and also understand it's a part of your style, and I think it works well for these shots.

Thanks, Daniel. Yes, it is part of my style. I am trying to figure out whether I can apply this painterly style to adults. Children have softer skin and a bit of a glow so they suit this style more. I shall have to experiment.

For close up portraits of adults I imagine that with an 85mm lens you could use a narrower aperture setting like f/2.2 or f/2.8 to get a little more in focus and still render a dreamy effect with the out of focus areas of the shot.

I like the 3rd image the most, but I'm not digging the parts of the face being OOF. I guess not my style.

I'd also like to see a little bit more room around the subjects as they feel like they are being squeezed into the photo.

Well, I tried f2 and f2.8 with the lens I am currently using, and you lose a bit of that magic. I know there is a tendency among modern photographers to focus on sharpness. But as long as one eye is sharp, i am happy. For me, it is more about atmospherics. I try to capture the soul of a person and a scene. I am sure a sharp photo might also convey something, but this is my style and my art. I don't get much encouragement for my images in other forums, but again I think that has to do with the prevailing photographic culture. The exception is the Facebook groups for vintage lenses, where many of the people are a bit on the fringe like me.

Thanks, Chez. Yes, I think it is a question of style. many people feel like you do. There is a focus on sharpness in modern photographic culture. I feel something gets lost in the atmospherics. Actually, the squeezing is intentional. More intimacy. More immediacy.
