To me, it seems Sony must use the correct time. I shot 30FPS and time stamps reflected that.

Are you guys still sticking with the non tracking versions?

For BIF yes, non-tracking. For perched birds in somewhat distracting environments I'm starting with a S. Flex Spot or Expand Flex Spot and then engaging Tracking just so I can fully recompose while it continues to do Bird Eye-AF.

Thanks for the update. I really appreciate it.

Hey guys what is the max distance range for clean sharp images with the A1 using a Sony 200-600mm lens ?
I've tried the 200-600mm alone then with the 1.4 tel and with the 2x tel and my images look as though I'm shooting through a dirty plastic bag.
I'm shooting this in auto [bird] RAW tripod mounted.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Frank

Same reply as the other thread

Distance will depend on air quality. If you are shooting in late morning/afternoon you are probably getting all kinds of heat haze.. just think about all that air you are shooting through. Best bet for long distance is early in the morning but like I mentioned it all depends on air quality.

I was shooting uncompressed RAW at Hi (20fps), and got 20 images with a time stamp of the same second, and several with the following second. I was using CFexpress, write speed 700MB/s, but 20 x 100MB = 2GB, so the time stamp definitely cannot be when written to the card (and that burst took more than 2 seconds to write to card, I know).

I have currently set my camera to Release, because I thought that was a requirement for top speed.

I switched to lossless compressed now, but that still limits me to 20fps. I don’t want to use lossy compressed.

I am trying Zone: Tracking - continuing to experiment, though, because I am no expert on this. I will happily change if someone has better ideas!

Yes I've likely developed a safe SS that I just use regardless of camera since 2015. Maybe I could lower it more on the A9 and come away with a shot more often then lowering it on the A1. I mean I shoot eagles and owls down to 1/800 and shoot ducks and such at 1/1600. I shoot smaller birds as fast as light allows. And yes I cropped the heck out of A9 images and still crop the heck out of A1 images. I'm often left with 3-6MPs even off of an A1 when shooting smaller, faster BIF.

Geoff,

I’m guessing your success at “lower” shutter speeds is also due to a good panning technique?

Out if Curiosity, are you shooting in manual most/all the time when shooting BIF? I ask because while I’ve tried Mark G’s Aperture mode (action) setup using Auto iso min ss, I always find myself wanting more control and ultimately switch to manual.

Yes, good technique will allow lower shutter speeds. But you always have to expect a lower keeper rate as you push the lower limits.

I shoot in full M 100% of the time. I mostly leave aperture wide open and that is why I've relegated it to the lower wheel as I find that wheel less ergonomic to stretch my thumb down to. I mostly just change SS and ISO as needed and use Zebras at 109+ to make sure my exposure is good. I have ISO on the upper rear dial and SS on the front dial. Works for me, YMMV.

Thank you! I was finding the same thing about Aperture. That i was using it wide open almost all the time and rarely used it, but was constantly changing min shutter speed and iso (which is a LOT more time consuming on his that was setup).
Now I need more practice with “stickiness”, if there is such a thing. For some reason I’m finding that if BEAF is not locked (or not able to stay locked due to birds turning) the focus moves off the bird quite a bit (using a 100-400GM, 30-50yds max). Granted, in this instance this morning it was birds running around on the ground which makes for a busy background. I have tried a variety of modes and have focus setup as you’ve described a few times in these threads.
I think it will come down to practice.
Thanks again

Side note(and off topic, sorry). I chartered a boat out of Bellingham summer if 2019 and stayed one night at a marina in Sidney. Beautiful area. Would love to go back some day. We had planned to cruise up to Naniamo as well, but ended up staying in the San Juan’s for most of the week.

What stickiness setting do you use for your flex shot tracking arbitrage?
