| p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The Most Hated Bird in the World? - Part 1 | |
I would have to say the Canada Goose, although there are other competitors for the title, such as the European Starling, Crows, Pigeons, Gulls, Cormorants, etc. Of course it is humans that hate these species, not Nature. Quite the human hypocrisy, since humans cause the most deaths and loss of habitat to all other species on the planet.
The main reasons why Canada Geese are so widely hated is that their large size, high population, and wide dispersement means lots of undesireable goose poop in urban areas. In undeveloped areas, this poop is beneficial in distributing seeds and as a natural fertilizer.
Canada Geese are one type of bird that does not feed its young. From the first day they hatch they have to forage for themselves as they follow their parents and learn from them. They will remain with their parents until the next year. During this time the parents will aggressively protect them against predators. Despite the fact that a bald eagle can kill a Canada Goose, I have witnessed Canada Geese block a Bald Eagle as it swooped down to snatch a gosling.
On Vancouver Island, humans created even more human/goose conflicts when hunters introduced adult geese onto the island so they could shoot them. Those introduced geese had not learned how to migrate, and as a result, they remain on the island all of the year. There are often culls done during the molting period when the geese can't fly, and both adult and young geese are slaughtered together.

#5 collar - Despite birders being able to read ID numbers on tags as small as those on a hummingbird leg, some 'expert' felt it was necessary to put a ridiculously large ID collar on Canada Geese. It is the only bird around here that I have seen with such a large collar. Those experts that say it does not bother the goose should have to wear a similar collar for the rest of their lives and see how much it would bother them. Another example of more Canada Goose discrimination.
