p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Local wood ducks

Hi All,

We're heading into spring here in the 'North' and I'm hoping that these two captured here might grace the duck box in my yard with their presence. So far I've spotted two pairs of wood ducks in the river by my house, hoping for more. All shot with a Canon 500mm at about f5 on a 1D with some fairly stiff cropping in post -- the ducks do not seem to like being anywhere need people. Comments and criticism always welcome.

Nice set of wood ducks.

They are shy ducks yet recently a colony has established in Kissena Park here in New York City. The colony is flourishing with 5 pairs having offspring last year and growing up here they have become accustom to people, a real treat!

Many thanks. You're giving me some hope that my duck box project on the banks of the river by my house will entice more of those lovely friends to move in around here.

Great images, Sean! I like the first image of the male WD and his reflection. Depending on the background, reflection of the surrounding area, etc. water fowls may look better if you photograph them from a lower point. Just a suggestion...

I completely agree, Joshua, but the local pair of wood ducks aren't cooperating. They refuse to pose in places where I can get down to the water line and like to keep dense trees between themselves and people -- these shots were taken through the gaps in the branches of the bushes along the shoreline. I'll have to try later in the year from a kayak and see if I can sneak in closer.
