A couple of images of the lovely Jess in our home studio. A three light setup - two bare speedlights left and right back. AD200 with 12-inch , gritted beauty-dish key light. Converted to B&W image in Luminar.

I like both images and I prefer the second one a little bit more for the eye contact. Personally, I would like to add a little bit fill light, just a tiny bit on the shadow part, at least in the face/neck area. Actually, it looks like it may be done by lifting the shadow in the face just a tiny bit. Again, that’s my opinion.

I *love* the vintage look of these... B/W conversion is spot-on.

I bit tricky with the tattoos, though. I have no problem with them (I have one), but hard to get in the mood when it is obviously a current photo trying to be old...if that makes sense.

Also, I would *slightly* clean up the acne on her face. Not to lose the detail, but just a tad.

I really like both of these. I would have lit the seamless background just a frog's hair to separate her hair from the background a bit more.

Thank you for the great and constructive feedback everyone, much appreciated! Definitely room for improvement on these - I'll have to play with the edit a bit more.

Good point on the tattoos but indeed hard to change :-).

Yes some great advice to consider! I find her "outfit" very "era-esque" in a great way!!!!
I lived in that era and this is very familiar! Very well composed and processed.

I totally agree! They can make or break a composition if not handled well. Yes mood..good word!

Really good feedback on the tattoos guys, it honestly hadn't crossed my mind during this shoot! Any suggestions on a "fix" (for this set and/or future sets?) ... of course a longer sleeve shirt comes to mind, lol, but maybe you have other suggestions I haven't thought of? ... really appreciate the constructive feedback!!

I will defer to my peers! This is a "slippery slope" for me and advice would be welcomed also!
But then again, the subject may dictate how one might compose the image. And in that I am deficient!

Very good pictures.

I would say re the tattoos and vintage look... She isn't vintage in her look, her look maybe retro but it is not period correct and I don't think she meant to be. For example her hair styling, makeup, piercings, bra and indeed clothing are not close to a look from the past...

I mean all of this in a positive way - I like the tats and the piercings etc Its modern and real.

I just wanted to add a opposing view to others as I feel it is valid and worthwhile.

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it! ... You are correct, the clothing piercings, tattoos, etc. were not coordinated with the lighting setup. I think it works though :-) ... I'm really pleased with these images and the model loves them too.

Thanks again for all the positive and constructive feedback!!

Adding a few more images from this same shoot with Jess. One thing I would do different next time is move the key light closer to my camera position to create more eye-contact interaction in the images. Still like these though :-).

In looking at the added images, I will add my thoughts:

Overall, she has a "deer in the headlights" expression in all of them. This is an easy "go to" expression when delving into modeling style portraiture, but I challenge you to mix it up.

Some images are *way* too tight (especially for her bad complexion). Too much "side eye" (too much white showing in her eyes) and for G-d's sake, either remove or clone out the contact lenses.

B/W conversion is good.

Very good feedback, thank you! I agree with the "deer in headlights" expression - I will change the light position next time, and work wit the model on more comfortable eye contact. ... I like the tight portraits, but can indeed work on the skin retouching. ... I hadn't noticed the contacts, lol, good tip!

My pleasure - thanks for being open to the feedback. I am sorry if it sounded a bit harsh - but I figured it would be more clear without the sugar coating.

Lots to like about these images - keep posting!
