Why use a tc on the Sony? Just shoot in crop mode for the same mp as the Olympus. Then you have 900mm vs 1000. The difference of course is in the autofocus(with bird eye) of the A1 for birds in flight, no blackout, silent shooting. For stationary they should be similar.

I once took both the g9 and panasonic 100-400 along with the a9 and the 100-400 on a trip to Hokkaido for nature. Whether it was close semi macro or birds, I enjoyed the a9 images more and ended up selling the g9. Also, being completely silent in nature allowed wildlife to get super close to me.

@shadow9d9 - for rapidly moving BIF, I've had more success in cropping the full 50MP A1 image. If I shoot in crop mode, clipped wings can be a problem. I prefer the wider FF view for BIF. For static perched birds, shooting in cropped mode is ok.

Clipped wings from BIF also happens with m43 bodies too, thats why the rumored 30+MP m43 sensor in the next-gen OMD body would be welcome for more cropping options. In particular, it would enable more cropping options when using ProCapture (if only Sony would implement ProCapture!).

FYI, bird eye detection on the M1X is similar to the Sony A1 (tho tracking is probably better on the A1). And silent electronic shutter is available on all mirrorless bodies.

EDIT: also, with the 150-400, my default configuration is to use an external 1.4x for 1120mm equivalent at the long-end. When the 1.25x internal extender is added, it gives 1400mm equivalent (but no longer hand-holdable). And on the 200-600, like others, I've found the AF speed to really suffer when using the 2x extender.

I've found that the big white Sony lenses scare off the local birds long before they get to hear the shutter sounds... although I can always set the G9 to silent shutter if need be.

any ideas as to why (and how) you've found this to be the case?

Switching to silent shutter disables the feature. You would have to ask Olympus why this is...

Mine appeared to shut it off when I switched drive modes yesterday, but I must have inadvertently changed something else because I couldn't replicate the issue just now. I thought I had read somewhere that there were drive speed limitations with the Bird AI, so I assumed that's what was happening. In this case, I'm quite happy to be wrong.

Would you mind sharing your menu AF settings for both cameras ? It would be very useful in evaluating your results. Thanks !
