It is an awesome lens, that’s for sure...as long as you are willing to put up with the bulk and weight, that is. I ordered a lens collar with Arca-mount foot back then when I had it. It added to both factors but at least, it would make it easier to handle and without worry about putting a lot stress on the mount while you carry that lens around.

Just curious what this lens could do that the 35GM couldn’t? It’s 2.3x heavier than the GM!😳

Eric, you can skip going to the gym if you own this lens . Just kidding... I loved the results coming from the lens but I ended up preferring the 35mm f/1.2, which is slightly lighter and smaller but faster. The GM 35mm lens wasn’t even in the picture back then in my case. Even now, I am sticking to the Sigma 35mm f1/2 at least for the time being, regardless how good the GM is.

Great comparison from Bastian here:

Maybe the sale is in anticipation to the release of the 50mm GM lens or maybe because it is no longer competitive considering smaller and lighter top lenses are showing up around the corner such as the Sony 35mm GM lens. The release of the 28-70mm f2.8 might be a sign that Sigma has realized they need to pay attention to other factors than image quality such as size and weight if they want to successfully compete.

Sale is nice but where is the image thread to really sell this lens.

At least I can use it with my 35/1.2 to do curls and complete my Sigma Flex weights set.

P.S. I love my 35/1.2 and yeah it's a heavy lens but the IQ easily makes up for the weight and then some more.

It’s a one day, one store sale. There’s nothing to read into it.

Someday there will be a guy with a camera bag heavy as a pile of bricks consisting of a bunch of these great-performing but huge Sigma primes that he picked up for cheap...serious value to be had if you don't mind the size, which I do unfortunately.

One of the world's largest retailers, and that discount cuts deep into their profit margin. We lightists can declare we have won this battle and the new arrivals from our E mount suppliers are turning the war in our favour.

The heavies, they fought the law (of gravity) and the law won. Good times, more choice, better carry, easier travels, better and faster shooting. This 1200g lens equals three/four new age lenses, or two GMs. Its time has already passed, as Sigma (and BH) have figured out from sales results. They were always niche lenses, from an era when pro choices 'trickled down' to regular photographers.

This isn’t the first 1 day sale for this price. Likely Sigma made B&H a special deal to move some of these slow selling lenses. I have a tiny CV 40mm F2.0 F mount pancake lens-just 1 stop slower.

Also realize that upon 1st issue the 40 was said to be a converted (DSLR) Cine lens. The 35mm F1,2 is a purpose built mirrorless lens. Likely making the lighter weight possible with an even a faster F stop than the 40. Incidentally, as good as the F.2 is Lens Rentals has the 40’s MTFs as even better.

Thought about it and decided I am happier with the 35 1.2 anyway. Even with that price eeehh not too keen on getting it. I enjoyed it while I had it in my DSLR days but man it's a damn brick. Not so easy to carry around. At least the 35 1.2 is more manageable Besides I think my eyes are more on the 50 1.2 GM anyway.

It's definitely a lens that deserves the DG DN upgrade
I really love the 40mm FL, but I can't justify the size or weight of this lens to myself or my gf.

Ended up ordering it. Was thinking of 35mm but then everyone shoots that. Got to try something different. Will see the weight. Only fast lens I have for Sony is Sigma 105mm f1.4.

Not sure I would buy *any* non-DG DN lens now.

The reduced size and weight of the 85mm when it went thru it's transformation was epic.

I guess if you *need* that FL / aperture now, you can justify it.

That bulky built-in convertor seems so gawd-awful now that they have found a way to eliminate it.

Waiting patiently for the 105 f/1.4 DG DN

YMMV

It's one of the best WO lenses ever made optically. I wish Sigma would make DG DN lenses for GFX.

The 35 1.2 is great... I don't know if it's the mount or what, but the problem with all of these new lenses for FE mount is they vignette way more than the non-FE mount lenses. Look at the 14-24 DN vs. the non-DN 14-24 for example. The weighted average speed - after accounting for vignetting - is the same between the 35 1.2 and the 40 1.4. So it seems a lot of the size savings is at the expense of vignetting. Usually that doesn't matter but for astro it does.

Maybe it's the mount? the sigma 40 1.4 is usually tested on EF mount. Maybe even that vignettes more on the FE mount. I asked Roger ... haha.

To answer my own question:

@ Phillip Reeve has a comparison of the 35 1.2 and 40 1.4 both tested on the A7rII.

https://phillipreeve.net/blog/comparison-sigma-art-35mm-1-2-35mm-1-4-and-40mm-1-4/#Vignetting

The 40mm is -2.2 @ 1.4 and -1.7 @ f2 for a half stop improvement.
The 35mm is -2.9 @ 1.2 and -1.9 @ f2 for a 0.7 stop improvement.

At lenstip, who tests the Sigma 1.4 on a canon body and the 35 1.2 on the A7rII:

The 40mm is -2.6 @ 1.4 and -1.3 @ f2 for a 1.3 stop improvement.
The 35mm is -3.8 @ 1.2 and -1.7 @ f2 for a 2.1 stop improvement

Obviously they don't measure the same. If we adjust based on the ratio:

(1.3 (lens tip)/0.5 (PR)) = 2.6x the improvement using the 40mm data.

Thus the expected improvement for the 35 for lens tip is 2.6*0.7 = 1.8

So it's pretty close to the same I am guessing but would be cool if Roger tested!

Good work!

I actually have the best trifecta which happens to be the Sigma FE 28mm 1.4, 40mm 1.4 and the 105mm 1.4.
While large, they are optical the best autofocus lenses I have.
I got all of them on super deals over a couple of years.

I am willing to deal with larger sizes for these 3 lenses and the Sony SAL 135 1.8 ZA.
They push the envelope of practicality, but are optically worth it.

While I think that the Sigma 35mm 1.2 is one of the best rendering 35mm lenses made, I have the Zeiss ZM 35mm 1.4 lens.
The Zeiss is one sweet lens, and am willing to deal with adapters and slight edge smearing at wide open aperture for the beautiful background blur and the perfect color rendering.
