After not following the photography gear market for quiet some time, I'm surprised to see Sony has finally done a 50 1.2! Great news. Will we also getting a 85 1.2? Always wanted to have those lenses in my Canon lineup but I switched to sony before I got my hands on them.

Also going to reread this long thread here, but are there already some bokeh comnparisons between this 50GM and say Sigma 50 1.4 and RF 50 1.2?

I'd take it with a grain of salt though .

New week, any new hope for B&H late pre-orders?

Mine from 4/25 is still sitting as "Backordered"

I see on Adorama's site the lens is listed to be back in stock on 5/25 (tomorrow)
B&H's site still does not specify an expected date.

EDIT: Bah, gonna hedge my bets. Placed an order on Amazon as well, estimated shipping date of 5/31. 5% cash back on Amazon vs a savings of 8.625% in taxes on B&H.

Every review I have seen gives the 50GM the edge in most categories. Nevertheless, I got mine today and compared against the FE50/1.4Z.

- It is clearly sharper, esp. towards the border region
- It is wider than the 50Z
- It is about 1/3rd of a stop brighter at equal f-stops (tested until f2)
- When shooting in portrait mode, focussing on a virtual head (upper border region), the 50Z suffered from the midzone dip, being soft until f2. The GM is super sharp there, too, almost no difference between f1.2 and f2. The 50Z is still clearly softer at f2 there.
- Slightly less CAs
- Focus speed is very fast and focussing issuper quiet.

Is it perfectly centered?
Mine has a weird behavior. Testing for decentering it looked clearly decentered, as the two left corners were sharper than the right ones. However, the inner 2/3 are equally sharp everywhere. Further tests seem to agree that the corners on the left bend forward, the corners on the right backward. The rest looks pretty much flat field. So for us (portraits) this is no issue, as stopped down everything is fine even for landscapes and for the rest I don't care. I don't want to send it back and wait another 4-6 weeks for a new one, too.

Personally, I think it's the best Sony lens to date (and I'm a 35mm type of guy).
The issues about decentering are worrying, as with any other lens, for me it's just too expensive a lens to accept the copy I managed to grab initially as one corner was improving very, very slowly with aperture (and I know it would trigger my OCD, even though I'd use the lens for portraits 99% of the time).

I see improvement and by f2.8 everything is fine for me. I see a bit weaker acuity towards the left border in landscape orientation compared to the right at portrait distances at f1.2 (sometime you want to place someone there). Increasing sharpening there makes results indistinguishable to the other side. By f1.8 - f2 the difference is hardly there anymore anyway.
We have some portrait sessions over the week-end to check how this plays out in real life. If this is fine we keep the lens, as I don't care about corners here.
Other than that, sharpness in the center at f1.2 is amazing. Focussing speed is fantastic, too.

Finally got my lens from Amazon today.

Haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but this is actually my first purchase of a brand new Sony lens so I had some questions:
1. Is the box supposed to be sealed?
2. Is there any protective plastic thats supposed to be stuck on anything? Like the orange G badge, or the the focal length badge, etc.

Mainly concerned because the shipping box for my package was quite strange... Cut up amazon box wrapped with clear tape and no bubble wrap or anything inside other than the lens box.

Most sony lenses come in an unsealed black sony box. Inside there will be a section with the paperwork, and a lens pouch in a clear plastic bag. Inside the lens pouch will be the lens, wrapped in bubble wrap. No clear protective stickers or anything like that.

Awesome, thanks for confirming!

No idea what is up with the outer box from Amazon... looks like the warehouse ran out of boxes of the proper size and someone decided to cut up a bigger box, then fold it to fit this lens.

Decided to try Fred's centering test today on my copy of the 50/1.2. First time trying any sort of centering test really.

Unfortunately the weather was terrible (downpour) and its supposed to rain until Monday so the test isn't as clear as I'd like.

100% (1000x1000px) crops put together into one image. RAW captures converted in LR with no editing. Cropped and straightened using Photoshop and then adjusted contrast for the entire combined image for some clarity.

A7C, f/1.2, 1/400s, 100 ISO

Again this is my first time doing this, but I think this is nearly perfect? All four corners look slightly softer than center, but to what appears to be the same degree. Maybe bottom right looks worse than the others.

Shoot, you're right, that's the one I'm waiting for. There goes another $2,000...

Surely an 85 f/1.2 GM will be at least $2300, if it's the same price as the 50 f/1.2 I'd be pleasantly shocked. 😮

Canon RF 85 is $400 more than the 50.

Lloyd Chambers seems to agree with you: he now rates it as the best rendering 50mm he's ever shot with (and he's shot em all), if not the best rendering Sony at any focal length.

Yeah, I think IQ-wise it's nothing short of spectacular (I compared it to ZA and as I mentioned before, GM is both smoother and sharper).
I managed to change my mind a bit in the following weeks, as the combination of "compactness" and focal length (35mm feels more natural to me), makes 35GM my primary choice now.
I'd still go for 50GM if rendering is prio though.
