Looks great to me... is the weight known?

This lens along with the Sony 20/1.8 G or the Sony 12-24 f/4 G would make a versatile and light setup.

I personally hope Sigma will make a good 14-24 F4 that takes screw-in filters. I remember seeing several patents from Sigma recently for some very unusual FL ranges. Of course lense are not always made based on the patents filed.

This new Sigma takes 67mm filters, as does the Sony 20/1.8 G. A really nice match when filters are needed for waterfalls or landscapes. Otherwise, I'll use the Sony 12-24/4 G for the wider end.

All 67mm filters, lightweight coverage from 20mm to 180mm:

Sony 20mm f/1.8 G
Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary
Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD

There's a switch there, near the "C" label...

Can anybody do a photoshop and see how the real sizes of this lens, the Tamron 28-75, and the Sigma 24-70 compare?

Looks quite compact. But still would have preferred an F4 version that is even smaller...

Here's a quick one.

Assuming the lens hood off, the Sigma looks to be significantly smaller. (I added a line to approximate where the front end of the lens is.)

My quick and dirty pixel counting calculations would show the Sigma will be between 95-100 mm long without a hood, and 135-140mm long with the hood. For reference, the Tamron 28-75mm is 118mm ong without a hood, and something like 145-150mm with the hood (I no longer have it so I can't say for sure).

Basic geometric computation shows the lens is only 96mm long (from the mount without the hood). Compared to the Tamron that is 118mm long, there is a difference of about 22mm (almost 1") which is huge! It must appeal to anyone wanting lenses as compact and light as possible.

However this is designated as a contemporary lens. So I guess we can't expect it to perform as well as the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 Art lens. If the performance is close, I may consider replacing my Sigma 24-70mm with this one for the size and weight.

If they put that out, I'd be all in!

I'd bet that the downgraded focal range would be the main disadvantage relative to the Art. Sigma's Contemporary line hasn't (yet) sacrificed IQ.

Depends on how one defines perform. I had the impression that the contemporary line of lenses have a nice character feel to them that might be missing from the Art line of lenses.

I wonder if the Sigma will be internal focus, like the Tamron. From the picture, it looks just like the telescoping Sigma f2.8 24-70 DG DN Art.

Aren't internal focus lenses typically longer than similar telescoping versions?

Are you talking about internal zoom?

This lens definitely looks like it extends. And the Tamron does as well.

96mm makes it even smaller than the Tamron 17-28mm, which is already pretty minuscule.

Looks like an APS-C zoom lens, well done with the size reduction Sigma.

That’s about the length of an adapted Leica 35-70/4 R. Just a little larger in diameter too.

Too many choices oh come on !
67mm filter size is fast becoming a universal mirrorless filter size...put another way, 77 of DSLRs is 67 of mirrorless
