p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A First Time for Everything

Just got around to looking through these from the early part of fall. Was late in the day and heading home when I saw this guy out on a pond. First time that I've ever seen one in the wild. I'm not an expert bird photographer (just started to dabble with it in 2020), so, would appreciate any C&C.

These are nice images and showing the environment can be very effective. The hardest part of photographing wood ducks is capturing detail in both the white feathers and the dark ones. When I photograph them, I expose for the whites and then bring up the middle and sometimes the dark areas in post processing. This can lead to a loss of contrast which can be addressed with a custom curve.

Thanks Morris, appreciate the thoughts. Yeah, this was a fairly hefty crop and given the higher ISO it didn't leave much feather detail. Next time will be more mindful of where the settings are. As it stands, I'd simply put the camera on my stored BIF setting and could've gotten away with a much slower shutter for this particular shot...not that I wasn't hoping he'd take off...
