Feeling like I was in a creative rut and relying too much on the amazing AF technology Sony offers I picked up a second-hand Canon 6D as I've had fun with that in the past as well as a few cheap (ish) prime lenses.

As I was goofing around with the 6D trying to use it as a webcam (turns out the USB port is toast) I remembered that I'd bought a Neewer EF/FE autofocus adapter a few years ago. Long story short-I tossed the 20mm on the Sony with the adapter and it works great. Having shot nearly every of the first and second with a few of the third gen Sony Alpha bodies (A7, A7ii, A7Rii, A7iii, A7riii, A6000, and A6300) the progression of AF performance is nothing short of incredible.

I agree. Especially for the price used ones are going for nowadays it is really quite a steal for what it is.

Have you shot much with the A7C? I知 looking to move to FF from my A6000 and am debating between A7iii and A7C. I will use it mostly for landscape, lifestyle, and sports photography - but specifically, mountain biking under the canopy of the forest. Hence the need for low light performance of FF. I am leaning towards getting a used A7iii, but the A7C is tempting due to its enhanced AF system. Viewfinder seems like a downgrade, though, and I知 not sure how much smaller it really is vs the A7iii one you have a lens on the front. It will be carried in either a camera-specific backpack or hip pack for biking (evoc makes them both). Thanks!

I just got my A7III back from Precision Camera. They replaced the shutter, sensor and CCD panel if I got the terminology correct. My battery was draining faster than normal, 100% to under 25% or less after only 100-150 shots. Still having that issue. Sony is covering a battery replacement under warranty for a new battery I bought last October. But it's stuck in limbo due to the severe weather in TX.

For some odd reason my photos look sharper. The AF is better. And I just can't explain why that is. Yes, the A7III is a great camera, but I'm most likely going to have to upgrade at some point if this battery issue isn't fixed. I took the camera out the other day and the battery was at 93%. Went down to 17% after 101 shots. That battery is less than 2 years old. Sigh...

Yeah I must have been getting better at learning to identify needs vs GAS, or it's just a credit to the A7III, but... since getting it in early March 2018 (it came early to my part of the world) I have had no reason to "upgrade". It's made me feel like I've arrived at "good enough" for what I do and I don't see myself upgrading within the same sensor size for many more years to come. Providing it doesn't break.

I'm on one A7III and one original A7 for traveling light, mf lenses, and backup or second body on occasions.

I've not shot the A7c-though it looks interesting. I'm sure the AF performance is slightly better but given how you're looking to do some sports I might advocate for the A7iii because of it's faster (1/8000) shutter speed.

Timely! Thanks for the feedback! I went with the A7iii and picked one up off another forum member over the weekend.

Does the camera have an airplane mode? (sorry, don't have one-waiting for the a7IV). If so, does that make a difference turning off the antennas?

It does have an airplane mode and it's off by default so I turned it on...same as with my a6400. I have only had the A7III for a couple of weeks now, so I can't comment on any changes in battery life. This is my first full-frame Sony and I love the size. The low light capability is amazing. Mine came with the 28-70 lens which seems fine to me, but I sure would love the 24-70 f/2.8 some day. By the time I can afford that, the A7VIII will be out! I might have to sell some Nikon gear.

I got an A7iii last summer and have been largely happy with it; also see no need to upgrade to anything else soon although I might get an A7C as a second camera for my small rangefinder lenses.

The only complaint I have is dust on the sensor; I have used mirrorless cameras from Sony since the NEX-5 and never had a problem but my A7iii is a constant source of frustration in that regard. I use a rocket blower every time I change lenses, run the sensor self-cleaner frequently, and have done a few wet-cleans and still have to spend time in post removing dust spots, sometimes dozens of them, from every photo that includes sky or white walls. Someone here on the forum said it got worse when Sony added IBIS to its cameras, which may explain why I never saw it on my NEX-series cameras. Proponents of DSLRs always say "if you buy a mirrorless camera you will have to deal with dust on the sensor" but in 10 years of shooting mirrorless I've never seen anything like this.

Yes, and Airplane mode is turned on. From what others have said this helps with saving battery power. No WIFI on. January 2020...remember when?! I went to visit family in FL and photographed Burrowing Owls. Shot about 450 photos, and many bursts. Battery went from 100% down to about 55% give or take. Fast forward to August 2020 and all of a sudden I noticed the batteries draining faster than normal. Prompted me to buy a new battery in Oct. of 2020. New battery did the same thing. And they are all OEM Sony batteries.

And now the aperture won't change with any of my 3 lenses. Sony 24-105 & 100-400 and Tamron 70-180. It will only go up or down one stop. Time to call Precision Camera!!

And like you I'm waiting for the A7IV. Hopefully it's a winner all around.

Yeah, they're dust magnets. Learn to wet clean and you're good.

Dust was an issue on the sensor of DSLR's as well. The dust collected on the mirror, and shutter. Then dispersed inside the camera when the mirror moved.
The dust ended up on the sensor. Same issue.
