Greetings All.
Anyone have any experience comparisons between the Voigtlander 21mm f1.4 vs Sony 20mm f1.8?

p.1 #2 · p.1 #2 · Comparisons between the Voigtlander 21mm f1.4 vs sony 20mm f1.8

I have the Voigtlander 21mm f1.4, but it is currently under repair in Japan. Unfortunately, repairs on Voigtlander lenses take a long time, which is why I have bought the Sony 20mm f1.8 in the meantime. But I can only compare the two lenses after I get the Voigtlander back.

I've tried many copies of the Voigtlander and now have an absolutely stellar copy.
I didn't have great expectations of the Sony, but was pleasantly surprised. I have had my first copy for a week now and so far it has been extremely good (unfortunately there was no sun to test the flare behavior).

My first experiences are as follows:
I can fully agree with Fred's conclusion. My copy is extremely sharp at f1.8 (sharper than my Sony 24mm GM and sharper than the Voigtländer 21mm f1.4) in the center and still very good in the corners.
When stopped down to about f4, the Sony is extremely sharp over the entire image right into the corners and above all - which is very important to me - it is evenly sharp without partial blurring (for example caused by field curvature) anywhere in the picture.
For me, however, an even and high sharpness between f4-f8 is very important and in this regard the Voigtländer and the Sony should not be far apart. I look forward to my comparison in a few weeks.

Subjective points: The Sony has a very nice color rendering, very different from the Voigtlander, but also very nice. On my A7RIII and in Lightroom, the colors come out of the camera much cooler. I like the clarity of the pictures and the sun stars better with the Voigtlander. I also suspect better backlight behavior with the Voigtlander. I really like the bokeh of the Sony, a little better than that of the Voigtlander and a little worse than that of the 24mm GM.
Both lenses can produce beautiful 3D images. The Sony is a bit bigger, but a bit lighter and feels like the "smaller" lens.
The autofocus works very well, which is the case with my camera with very few lenses (e.g. more reliable than with the 24mm GM).
The Sony has a much wider angle than the Voigtlander.
Manual focusing works very well with the Sony. Sony has made great progress there.

I will have a hard time selling the great 20mm once I got the Voigtlander back. But I would probably prefer the Nokton because of the sun stars. The other characteristics pretty much balance each other out for me.
Due to the field curvature, it is probably much more difficult to find a Voigtlander that is very good on your respective camera (because of mount tolerances).

I can't compare as I don't have the Sony, but I love my Nokton. I would probably at least try the Sony if I didn't mind busier sunstars though.

Wow...the Sony is looking very nice. I have the M-mount version of the 21mm Voigtlander for my M10 but I'm thinking of selling the 21mm and putting the proceeds to a Sony 20mm. From what I can gather the Sony is sharper from around F1.8 to F4 and I agree it also looks cooler than the Voigtlander.

Excellent pics. Oh how I miss Zermatt!
Where was the climbing pic taken - from the base of Matterhorn or somewhere else?

Thank you!
If you mean the fourth, that was captured in Braunwald on the "Eggstöcke" via ferrata. The via ferratas there are sometimes quite difficult, but extremely beautiful.

Since I can't compare the two lenses at the moment, I picked out pictures from different places that I can link and that might clarify my opinion ...

What a tough call!

I sold my Voigtlander 21 f3.5 'in favor' of the Sony 20 f1.8 - a decision I sometimes regret even though the Sony has turned out to be an excellent lens.

Both are excellent lenses but miss the Color-Skopar a lot and am considering switching back from the Sony to the f1.4 version of the Voightlander. I'd love to have the Voigtlander sun stars back.

What to do, what to do?

I have the 21/3.5 and the Sony. I mostly use the Sony, but I love the tiny CV- so small that I can always have it in the bag and it delivers images beyond its diminutive proportions. And the sunstars With both being fairly inexpensive I don’t mind keeping both in my kit.

I had the Nokton and recently sold it. I liked it, but I think the Sony 20G just makes more sense in terms of versatility - it’s weather sealed, it has autofocus (which does in fact matter sometimes), better for astro, and it’s lighter.

The Sony 20 is a fantastic astro lens for the price, or any price really. The CV not so. Just a consideration for some.

@HelBen85 - That first CV 21/1.4 photo has great depth and tones—really nice photo.

Thank you! This lens is so good and so versatile. Unfortunately mine has been under repair in Japan for 3 months now. I really miss it

Further point possibly worth consideration:

Compared to the Voigtlaenders Sony color is cooler and does not give as lush greens / saturated browns.

Hiking in the mountains I feel that both the CV 21/1.4 as well as the CV 21/f3.5 give nicer colors.
The Sony 20mm at times enhances the unwanted blue haze.

Thank you both for answers. I have just purchesed Nokton and it seems it works great, but I can hear rattles when I shake it! It was sold as new, should I return it? Is it possible that floating element rattles in manual focus lens?

Where did you get the idea to shake the lens from?
Have the M-mount version here and I have to shake it really hard to hear a faint rattling noise.
Think it is a part of the aperture mechanism though.

Just a gently shake to make sure everything is allright. Now I realized that the sound is the loudest wideopen and not noticeable at f16... I`ve heard about "rattling" but only on AF or stabilized lenses, thats why I am so surprised to hear it on VC 21/1.4.

I just gave mine a shake at both f1.4 and f16 and didn't hear anything at all.

We have just discovered the „shake test“, a new dimension for qualifying our lenses.
I‘m amazed 😊

Fred should take it up in his extensive tests. Possibly fake lenses can be distinguished from real ones this way. Most likely the sound must be just right for a lens to qualify as perfect: not too intrusive, but clearly perceptable? Yes?

Bastian, your astonishement speaks bounds …

(Please take all this with a sense of humor: we are really serious when we test our lenses in all dimensions. But sometimes we are extreme 😉. )

Just to add: I can elicit a whizy clicking sound from my CV 35 Apo lanther.

This sound is clearly more full bodied than the one I can elicit from my CV 21/3.5. On the later only a very faint rather unmelodius and metalic click can be perceived.

In summary shaking manual focus lenses can elicit sounds. I can confirm that on nearly all my manual focus lenses, not only Voigtlaender but also older manual focus Pentax, Leica, Zeiss, Sigma and Tamron lenses.
- The sound is louder when the aperture is wide open and
- considerably subdued or even non existent when the aperture is closed.
- f1,4 to f2.0 lenses are louder than f3.5 or even f5.6 lenses.
- In addition to the variation with f-stop there is a variation between lenses of different focal lengths, with tele lenses having a tendency to being louder (but there are exceptions).
- It also appears to depend on the lubrication of the diaphragm.

But all these noises have to be put into perspective:
In total the noise elicited by shaking a manual focus lenses is rather quiet. I have to listen carefully to detect it. Considerable force is needed when shaking to make this sound clearly perceptable.
