Those are lovely young ladies!
Based on my years as a full time pro, I have a few things you should consider as you move forward:
Posing: Head tilt is effective, but I think in a few a little less tilt would be better.
Lighting: I see you experimented, which is good! I see you used a kicker on some, which helped with background separation. I suggest you buy a good reflector if you don't already have one. I like the Westcott 5-in-1. Get a 50" and maybe add the 30". When doing one light, high ratio dramatic lighting, a little fill would keep the mood but help prevent crushing the blacks. Also experiment with lighting patterns. For instance, look at the broad lit image or your youngest daughter. Go back and take a series including the broad lit, then do short lit, loop, butterfly and Rembrandt. Study how her appearance changes based on the lighting pattern. Some patterns work better with specific facial shapes of round, oval, heart and thin.
Your photo of the garage points out one of the major problems of home studios, especially when using large modifiers. The ceiling is just too low to get the key light high enough for many lighting patterns. By looking at the catchlights I see you could make about 10 o'clock with your key, but in some it was at 9:00 o'clock, or side lighting. If possible, you might even try putting the background in the garage door and step out into the driveway where you can get your key a lot higher. I live out in the country so I'd have not problem, but if you are in an urban neighborhood, you might not want to draw that much attention. Also, check if your city (San Jose, right?), has an artist cooperative. Often they have studio space that you can rent at a modest rate.
I wish you much success! Keep experimenting but mostly have fun!...Show more →
Thanks for all the tips and what to look out for. I love this idea and just a pain in the ass I would think to haul everything is my only problem. I will have to get better with my space.
"Go back and take a series including the broad lit, then do short lit, loop, butterfly and Rembrandt." - This is something I want to get much better at and how to replicate each look versus just guessing. I am thinking of making a notebook with comments or critiques so I know what to look for when I am shooting. Sincerely appreciate the comments!
