Went down to the pond in a local park that is normally filled with wigeons and mallards, and found this guy.

Hi Stephen................nice subject you had posing for you. #2 is not an easy one to nail the focus but you did great!
Images are a bit large, and as a suggestion if you are cropping these up larger you are losing some image quality. At times a smaller subject with a higher image quality may have more appeal. Not sure but looking for a way to be helpful if I can

REF: image size
I am not cropping these up larger. In this particular set, the images were large in my frame. After cropping them in LR, I then downsize them to max 2048 x max 1200 and convert to sRGB JPEGs for uploading to Flickr. So these are actually downsized, the first two by a factor of about 3:1, the other two by as little as 30%.

Normally, I don't have quite so cooperative a bird. Usually my subject is small/and or far away enough that my crop barely exceeds 1:1 screensize (16:10 HD pixel dimensions).

I'd be happy for some mentoring by PM if you'd like.

Great click! But as I can see that there was some noise, it looking so awkward. So, if you correct your settings and you can see the difference. Moreover, you can google or youtube it.

We had this same species on a local pond in San Jose and I can remember all the fuss it created! sadly it was in an are where it was not safe to bring expensive photo gear so I had to pass.

John...Looking back through the set of images, I presume you are referring [primarily] to the 3rd, portrait oriented, image. I agree there is significant noise visible and I wouldn't normally post this noisy an image. I'll describe how that came about in a PM.
