Your setup worked great, Joshua. Masterly caught. I believe 1 and 4 are either Allen's or Rufous juveniles, because no central patch on the neck. I don't know which type you have in your location. They are really hard to tell the difference. The others look like juvenile Anna's females, no central neck spot. Some real expert can chime in and correct me.

Thank you very much, Rex!

#1 and #4 were taken this morning and the remaining images were taken yesterday. I could have sworn that they were the same species. Allen’s and Anna’s are here locally but I am not sure about Rufous. Frankly, they all look the same to me. I thought there is this one visitor to my Cape Honeysuckle so far. You definitely know more than I do. I am hoping to see a male Anna’s... I will be waiting with bated breath.

This is a really gorgeous set of photos, Joshua! You captured the birds at just the right moment in every case, and the fact that the details on the birds are tack sharp while the backgrounds are so clean makes for some perfect photos.

Amazing work Joshua !

Great light in 1 and 4.

My favorite is the tighter shot #2.

Thanks for sharing,

Bryan

If you are not staying here, you will miss the portrait workshop after the hummers are gone ...

that's right, Bobby. Since Joshua indicated that he cannot afford the traditional models, the model is a fat accountant from the East coast.

What wonderful images Joshua!!....nice you didn't have to go far. Love that you set up a reflector, not even something I would have considered (maybe because I don't own one ). I do have extension tubes....use them as napkin rings
Happy and Healthy New Year to you and yours!

Very nice! Lighting is great. Number 4 is my favorite. I will have to give that extension tube a try.

Thank you very much, Shirley! As the hummer moved from one flower to the other, I had to be selective in triggering the shutter. But when the position of the hummer and background appeared to be pleasing, I fired away. So, I could do the selection at my convenience later .

Thank you very much, Bryan! I used a silver reflective for both and I used a white reflector for the rest. I thought first the reflective reflector would bother the hummer but no, it kept on coming back.

Don’t forget to bring your “sexy” outfits, KD but make sure that they still fit you before you come out here !

Thank you very much for your kind words, Eric! Luckily, there are accessories that are interchangeable and can be used for both portrait and wildlife photography . But frankly, this is my first time of using a reflector here. I considered using flash but I realized that the recycle time of flash may not be able to keep up in a burst. Plus, flash may harm the hummer, I figured. I started out with just a white reflector and the effect was not so pronounced and switched to silver reflective the following morning. I figured if it bothered the hummer, it would not bother to come, at the worst.

Ha, I like the idea of using the extension tube as a napkin ring. So, it is another multi-functional item, too, then .

Happy Holidays to you and your family, Eric ! And the most important wish of all considering the circumstances we are in now, “Stay Healthy”!

Thank you very much, Photog Guy! Yes, please do and see how much closer you can get but you still need to use your long lens for that though.

Great shots Joshua, and I agree with Rex that 2,3,5 are different individuals and likely species. They look close to the female black-chinned hummingbird I see in coastal Mexico on visits there. But now you have the flowers, they will come and you will end up with more hummingbird shots than all your other species combined.... . And eventually you will see the males too to help with the ID. Have fun, those of with two feet of snow will live vicariously via your yard!

Nice work on the winter hummers.

1 and 4 are Rufous (or Allen’s if you are in the correct CA location). The other three are Anna’s.

Colin, thank you very much for your kind words and identification of the hummers!

I was out there again this morning. And, I saw at least 2 hummingbirds that didn't get along with each other. How serious of a fight it was, I am not sure. They flew away while still fighting. But very shortly after that either a 3rd one or one of the previous 2 appeared. And that one appeared to be the same as on the first day.

I know hummingbirds are territorial and they fight quite a bit, defending their territory. We saw that quite a bit in Costa Rica. Maybe one of them already staked the Cape Honeysuckle as its territory already . But for sure, they are 2 visitors to my backyard.

Yes, I am not complaining about the weather here, especially today. It is sunny and quite warm, not quite T-shirt warm but very comfortable. I could watch over the plant, camera ready to shoot while browsing the internet on my iPad .
