Pre-order: FujiFilm GFX-100S and GF 80mm f/1.7 lens
Breaking the status quo of medium format, FUJIFILM has announced the GFX 100S. This mirrorless medium format camera ups the resolution to 100MP, shrinks the body size to something highly portable, and packs in a full suite of multimedia recording features to suit both photo and video needs. Alongside the camera body, FUJIFILM has also introduced the fastest autofocus-enabled medium format lens to date: the GF 80mm f/1.7 R WR. Combined, the new camera and lens make medium format approachable and viable for the contemporary image maker, together bringing more speed, more resolution, and more versatility.

To me, this sounds really interesting. A smaller GFX100 with IBIS in early 2021

I like the square of the current 100 but I did like the 50r form factor. So this is gonna be somewhere in between with one battery?

If they can't drop it to a single battery, it will be a very large camera. From my perspective, they MUST drop it to a single battery or there is almost no point to it (except maybe to capture more sales with the 100MP sensor in a cheaper body before they move up to the 150MP sensor sometime in the future).

It will be interesting to see what they introduce in the winter.

Sounds like Fujifilm may be hoping to get ahead of the rumored 90MP Canon "R5s" with pixel-shift to more than 300MP.

Related good news: If the cost of a 90MP FF sensor is down to where it can go in a camera like the R5 series, then the cost of a 100MP miniMF sensor such as that in the Fujifilm cameras has also likely come down significantly.

Lots of interesting competition these days, and we're the beneficiaries.

Since I have the 50R and R5 already, the R1, which is rumored to have ~20mp, global shutter, and 20 stops of DR, may interest me more than the 100S or R5s. I think I'm ready for new tech instead of just more resolution from the same tech.

More GFX cameras is great news. Well ... actually rumors, not news. We'll see if they turn reality.

As I've stated before - I sorta hope they make a X-Pro GFX. That would be killer.

Honestly Canon small format cameras with absurdly high Megapixels isnt really THAT interesting, for they've done that before and everybody knows now they wont have the matching performance otherwise anyway. Not even compared to other small format cameras, let alone medium format ones.

I'd rather would rather have less and better pixels, thank you very much. After all, clean 6 Megapixels is all one needs to print letter size at 300 dpi with perfect quality.

I will happily take the dirty 100MPs anytime. Just the existing GF100 is too big and ugly as far the camera looks go. Wish the grip was better. And yes, I am shallow, I do care for the looks.

Global shutter will be the next revolution.

I'm wondering when Fuji will get it in their aps cameras, as I presume they will show up there before the GFX.

Is there a legit Sony sensor on the horizon that will support global shutter?

The GF mount was built to accommodate future increases in battery capacity should one be designed. I think we'll see Fujifilm increase the capacity of the existing GFX battery much like Canon did for theirs moving from R to R6/R5.

https://fujifilm-x.com/en-us/stories/gfx-technologies-2/

...X Mount has 10, and the new G Mount has 12. With the addition of 2 terminals, more electrical power can be outputted and make use of the higher capacity NP-T125 battery. There also is room for future development, if a higher capacity battery is ever developed...

It'll probably show up in everything within two years of the first manufacturer doing it. I don't follow rumors around Sony, so not sure if they have anything in the pipeline or not. I would expect they would, though.

Global shutter would make life easier for people like me shooting with strobes outside. When it will happen, god knows.

Wasnt Panasonic supposed to offer a new video camera with the first organic sensor and lossless global shutter ? I sort of lost sight of that one.

Panasonic AK-SHB 810

https://www.provideocoalition.com/panasonic-ak-shb810-an-8k-organic-sensor-camera-for-broadcasting/

The lack of actual product offers when you google this implies Panasonic didnt actually manage this. Yet ?

I like that it will be like the GFX50s. Just wish the hump at the back is not there. Everything else on GFX50s is perfect.

Yes, all I want is an XH-1 style 100mp GFX (with the removable EVF that takes the tilt adapter) then I'm gold.

An XH1 or XT4 style 100MP miniMF camera, as part of a system that includes more lenses like those that FF photographers rely on, seems like an important move for Fujifilm as higher MP FF sensor systems come on the market.

Having such a system would mean that the Fujifilm GFX system could realistically compete with the high MP FF systems from other manufacturers, and in fact could logically claim to exceed their capabilities. This would have all kinds of positive effects:

1. It would certainly draw photographers who do high MP work on FF towards the miniMF Fujifilm systems.

2. It would expand the range of types of photography for which these systems would be well suited.

3. By increasing the sales of miniMF sensor cameras, the economics of scale would tend to lower the price per unit for the sensors.

4. This could be done without impairing the cameras' usefulness for those who already like the GFX cameras.

Fujifilm would need to continue and expand their existing leveraging of the interface in the smaller XT4-style cameras, and they would need to embrace the idea of the 33x44 sensor cameras acting more like FF mirrorless cameras in all ways other than the sensor itself. They would also need to fill out gaps in the current lens offerings (and perhaps rethink a few of the existing lenses) in order to address the needs of these potential buyers.
