Why do I have too many photos of GBH? Easy, they are quite common in our urban areas of Vancouver Island, and they are the most easily approached bird.
How close you can approach them depends on too many factors to list them all. One factor that makes them so easy to photograph is their exceptional ability to remain motionless for so long. And I mean without even batting an eye.
This often means you can take shots of them using a tripod and shutter speeds of a minute or more. That really helps during low light conditions we get in the Pacific Northwest during the Fall and Winter, and keeping ISO's down.
A few "distant" shots to start the series.

1 - typical estuary environment

2 - the pond alongside our home

3 - quite a wingspan for making any agile movements
