This past fall some areas of this drought stricken area received a good 4 inch rain that filled the playa lakes. its not a large area but it is now full of geese and Sandhill Cranes. It has been a lot of fun watching them and last Friday several unexpected opportunities came along.
When I first headed towards the playa lakes (about 5 to 8 miles away from my home) in my Camo Gear, I was prepared to sit a tall bunch of weeds near the water edge. However, when I turned a corner to park there was a ring necked pheasant just across the road in a wheat field. After a few minutes of shooting the pheasant I then started heading towards the tall weeds when the single crane flew over a me. I was under a center pivot system so he didn't see me and flew right over. Just after that a flock of geese flew over with three different types of geese flying in the same group. After a few more minutes and no birds near the lake I headed back to my truck and looked up and saw the Northern Harrier flying towards me. The light was behind me as the sun was about to set when I caught the image of the Harrier in flight low over the grass. The low light created the blue colors on his back and tail as he flew perpendicular to the sun from North to South.
