Official: Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM ($1,399)
A classic wide-angle prime with an updated, sleek design, the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM is characterized by its speed and relatively compact form factor. The versatile focal length suits everything from street shooting to landscape and documentary subjects, and the fast maximum aperture excels in low light and for controlling depth of field. Also, as a G Master lens, it features an advanced optical design for well-corrected imagery with a high degree of sharpness and clarity.

Two XA (eXtreme Aspherical) elements and one extra-low dispersion element reduce a variety of aberrations, color fringing, and distortion, and the optics are complemented by a Nano AR II coating that also suppresses flare and ghosting for improved contrast. Balancing the optics is an XD Linear Motor system that uses two separate focusing motors to deliver especially quiet, precise, and quick autofocus performance. The lens also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design and fluorine-coated front lens element to support shooting in inclement conditions.

Pre-orders now available at: B&H Photo | Amazon | Adorama ($1,399)

  1. As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations. Additionally, these lenses feature robust and intuitive-to-handle physical designs to benefit both photography and cine applications.

  2. Wide-angle 35mm lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras; however, it can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 52.5mm equivalent focal length.

  3. Notably fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field.

  4. Two XA (extreme aspherical) elements are incorporated into the optical design and feature superior surface precision for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, distortion, and other spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.

  5. One extra-low dispersion element is featured in the lens design and helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.

  6. Nano AR Coating II has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions. This updated coating is better suited for larger, curved elements and is especially adept at minimizing internal reflections.

  7. Two XD Linear Motors, along with an internal focusing design, provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance. This design also contributes to more natural, intuitive Linear Response manual focus control and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.

  8. A focus hold button is featured on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.

  9. Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.

  10. Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.

  11. Fluorine-coated front element resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints and is easy to clean.

  12. Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

IMO, it's the lens missing in the line-up as it's not easy to design a fast and high resolution 35mm lens with smooth transition zone rendering.
So far, only the huge Sigma 35/1.2 and RX1's Sonnar 35/2 were able to accomplish this.

If it's a tad smaller than the 35/1.4 ZA, while offering similar resolution/rendering to the 24/1.4 GM, I'd be already impressed.

Hope they pulled off some magically shruken lens design out of the box. Not that I have the money anyway now (thanks COVID ) but one day... if it's over 600g I'm not gonna get it anyway .

The source is Nokishita who are pretty much tact and not rumors so I would bet money on it! Lucky I’m selling my 24GM

Quality wise Sigma 1.2 will be the test bench.
Price and weight makes the rest.

Not an f1.2?? Perhaps the rumors are not accurate. Looks like I will more than likely be keeping my outstanding Sigma 35mm f1.2 ART. After shooting this lens, it would be tough to go back to an f1.4 - there is a big difference in wide-open rendering.

Also, Canon seems to be releasing some great f1.2 RF lenses and I expect that a 35mm f1.2 R will be next, so Sony might immediately be behind if this new GM lens is actually an f1.4.

On a positive note, its good that Sony finally addressed their 35mm f1.4 deficiency (I went through four of their current 35mm f1.4's and didn't find any of them to be excellent or worth the price). Also, it seems like all of the latest Sony offerings have been really excellent, so I expect this new lens to be world-class.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,
A 35mm f/1.2 lens yields more blur compared to f/1.4 but it does not say much about rendering characteristics. Sigma already offers a superb option and I don't see the point of Sony releasing another monster lens for even more money.

I am glad Sony took their time and went with a 35mm f/1.4 lens -- keeping things as compact as possible. I am very hopeful rendering will be amazing.......Sony don't blow it!

I'm glad it's 1.4 if it's true. Maybe they'll pull some wizardry and make it like 24 gm size. While the za 35 was soft it was still my favorite in terms of atmosphere

hope it's not only on high end lenses, a new affordable 4/16-35mm OSS would be nice, shorter zoom to match the 28-60mm in size/range, I would use it for urban scenes and travel but it could be a lot better for vloggers and social than the ZE 16-35

Looking at previous GM designs, it will likely have XA front element(s) reducing coma to almost nil.
I'm also paying attention to their rumored 16mm f/1.8 GM but the idea of having a 35/85 combo with similar rendering is very exciting. Better late than never.

The 24/1.4 GM wide open is outstanding for a 24mm lens but perhaps Sony could do even better at 35mm. As long as it does not compromise rendering, I'm all for it.

I hope this lens is like the GM 24 and 85 with emphasis on rendering rather than the GM 135 emphasizing resolution.
