My wife and I took a trip to San Luis NWR yesterday. The sandhill cranes are starting to show up but they weren't there in droves yet.

We ran into a pair of tule elk that were as close as I've ever seen them to the road. Usually they stay 200-300 yards from the edge of the pen but this pair were 50-75 yards out. They tolerated my presence for about a minute before they moved off.

Memories are coming back. I haven't been in that area for many years. The Merced NWR was my first training ground for the Sandhill Cranes BIF. After that I preferred the areas near Sacramento. Thanks for sharing.

We decided to try moving to Merced NWR which is about 8 miles away. We'd never been there before but had the time and didn't have the teenagers asking if we could go home now. ;^)

Merced NWR also has an autotour route. Unlike San Luis NWR they keep the marshes wet so there were a lot more birds.

I was at Merced NWR a couple of times and yes, for sandhill cranes and snow geese. The last time I was there was easily 15 years ago though. It was like a mini Bosque for lack of a better description.

Anyway, you got a nice variety of wildlife there; your images are excellent and enjoyable, Chris!
