p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · G9 and GH5s 180/240 FPS Limitations

I bought a G9 to use it at 180 fps, but found that you cannot set the ISO or exposure time - the camera does this for you - which is very very frustrating in challenging lighting conditions.

Does anyone know if the GH5 or GH5s also have this limitation?

I want full control of the ISO and shutter speed at 180 fps (or up to 240 fps on the GH5s).

Thanks -

John

Just to answer my own question, the local rental shop (Glazers) was kind enough to pull out a GH5s and check this out - yes, for the GH5S you have full ISO and SS control in VFR (slow motion) mode.
Annoying that Pany crippled the G9 in this way.

You have not actually discovered all of the features, yet. You need to set the camera to FHD 24 or 30p 420 (not 10 bit) in creative movie mode and you will see that VFR is available. It is another way to get the same slo-mo as in the "locked down" High Speed mode. All your settings will be available when in "M" after you set the percent of "VFR" that you want (up to 180 fps).

Hope this helps....

I thought I've already been there on the G9 - no matter how you get to VFR mode the G9 will not let you set the ISO or shutter speed independently.

I will look at this again tomorrow when I get back to being where the G9 is currently in service.

Ah... but everybody knows that you are supposed to have both the G9 and the GH5s

Update:

say_doyster was correct - if you get to the 180FPS the other way (VFR vs. High Frame Rate Video) then ISO and shutter speed are available to set. Why the hell would they do that?

Well, just upgraded to the GH5S to get the higher/better ISO and 240FPS anyways . . .

While the GH5S is certainly better in noise performance in general, the G9 is not slouch with the last firmware upgrade. None of the LUMIX cameras are known to be great in SloMo above 120fps in FHD. Depending on light, speed of action and DOF needed, the slomo can fall apart quickly even on the GH5S above 120fps. YMMV

Also, the UHD 60P holds up well on all three cameras even though it is not that high a frame rate. I have heard on various forums that some prefer to slow down the UHD 60P to get anything over 120p FHD - yes, they downsize/crop the frame (from UHD to FHD) and slow it at the same time. (Never tried it myself.)

Today I installed and used the GH5S at 240 fps, 51,200 ISO @ 1/250 sec with an f/2 lens wide open and it was just enough . . . quality was acceptable for the desired results.

Thanks!
