It helps with the depth of field. Lower f stop helps to get more of the foreground and background on focus and there might be some performance improvements. Most lenses benefit from stopping down unless you are aiming to blur your background to oblivion and in which case you are shooting something related to portraits.

Don't get me wrong, these are very nice. I like the comp in all 3, very well done. But, why shoot @ F5.6 is beyond me.
