Some Korean R5 users claimed about sensor burning issues.
If anybody uses 1.2 lens without lenscap, or anybody who use R5/R6, please check your sensor frames.

There's is a reason Canon puts instructions in their manuals that you are to always store mounted lenses with the caps on.

Has nothing to do with f1.2 lenses either.

A myriad a glass elements act like a magnifying glass when directing light to a fragile sensor? Well I never!

Anyways, doesn't the R5 have the same shutter curtain closing feature as the R when the camera is off? You're not supposed to point your camera at the sun, ever, when using the camera, that didn't magically change with mirrorless.

Anything hot enough to bake a sensor will burn right through those black shutter curtains... At a very minimum, they will curl and then your sensor is next and you have a big repair bill no matter what.

So I should never use an f1.2 lens without the lens cap in place?? Um, OK.

I enjoyed singe-ing stuff using a magnifying glass, as a kid. A lens should do the same thing, if pointed at the sun. I'd probably try it if I was in the middle of nowhere and needed a fire. I also potentially get a bit nervous if the sun is in the frame using LV or mirrorless. Although I did shoot some this evening but the sun low at sunset

I feel bad about cooking a few ants when I was a kid.

The sensor is at or close to the focal point of the lens and so the light and heat are concentrated over a small area, which will get very hot. The shutter is much closer to the rear of the lens and the light is not concentrated on a small spot but spread out. Not good, but not as bad as when concentrated. The amount of light/heat hitting the sensor/shutter depends on diameter of the front lens element and so a 600mm f/6.3 will heat up a shutter far more than an f/1.2 50mm.

But even like that... sensor frame shouldn’t burn.
This burning is quite often happened now. Even very short time use(less than 3000 release shutter count)
Especially R5/R6 is more released in Asia than US market now.
Many r5/6 users so nervous this issues.

Yes the sensor will most likely be damaged if the lens is focused at infinity on the sensor when pointing at the sun however bear in mind that if the lens focus is set closer than infinity when pointed at the sun then the infinity focus of it's projected image can be anywhere in front of the sensor where it can wreak havoc on other internal parts of the mirror/image box or even the lens itself most likely if it is a short telephoto macro or a longer focal length telephoto lens. I agree that the most damage is caused by lenses with the largest front elements most notably a 300mm f2 (150mm dia), 600 f4 (150mm dia) or the 500mm f2.8 Sigmonster zoom (179mm dia). The larger the front element the more light energy/photons that is collected to then be concentrated downstream at the image focus plane regardless of focal length of the lens. Hmmm, imagine the energy that a really large telescope can project.

As a little boy, nearly 70 years ago, I spent many a happy time burning holes in paper, wood etc with magnifying glasses and gathered a lot of practical experience! A misspent childhood can provide useful learning for later on in life as I have had a fascination for lenses ever since, which quickly translated into a love for optical instruments and photography.

Many people have thousands of shots on their cameras already and I haven't heard of cases where the sensor frame is melting. This is the first I've heard of this. Many sites would have heard of this and advertised it but only a few, likely from the same single source. Many think the damage was done at the factory during assembly.

I won't even get into the gore that was done to one of my 550ex flash units years ago when using a 'Better Beamer' fresnel lens in front of it.
It still works fine though.

Not only that, but my R flashes this warning almost every time you turn it off.

And I thought that *I* was the only person who ever did that.

It left a nice "burn hole" on the body of the flash.

I was carrying the lens/camera on a tripod over my shoulder with the 'better beamer' in place . . . when I suddenly started smelling plastic burning.

Actually, I didn't smell plastic burning. What alerted me was the sensation of a STINGING on my finger (I thought maybe it was an ant). When I moved my finger, the sensation went away. THEN I noticed the burning plastic smell.

This was on a trip to the Wild Animal Park at Escondido.

I have read others having this warning. My R5 doesn't.

No mirror to direct some of the light back out of the system, so I guess these new R series will heat up much faster. Lens caps are now more necessary than ever.

We are in to astronomy as well. We have heard stories in the community of people burning their homes down with their telescope. That picture you see on TV with the scope pointing at a window....that's what does it. Only during the day time. Bad idea. Same concept here with these cameras, only (maybe) the damage is contained to the camera itself.
