No doubt you have a bucket list of wildlife shots you'd like to get. I do too and on that list I've had coastal wolves for as long as I can remember. Last month I spent 8 days with a pack of 14 coastal wolves - 7 pups and 7 adults. There were many takeaways and incredible experiences from those 8 days. The weather quite frankly sucked and that, combined with the location and light conditions, challenged me in ways I've never experienced. But I gotta tell you, these wolves are just incredible. They're highly intelligent and they have a very apparent pack structure. If you like dogs and you're familiar with their behaviour, you'll identify the many similarities they share with wolves. I certainly did. Since the wolves are sadly hunted with no limitations here, the location will remain a secret. Anyhow, enough jibber jabber. Hope you find one or two images you like.

1. Meet the alpha of the pack. He greeted us one morning.

2. He immediately proceeded to howl and bark in front of us. At first I feared he was telling the rest of the pack to relocate. But he was not. He was letting us know this was his beach. He was the boss. Message understood.

3. Meanwhile, another wolf in his hunting group was chilling out in the washed up seaweed waiting for him to finish.

4. The day before we observed other pack members bringing back food for the pups. Notice the extended belly:

5. Another full belly shot:

6. Sometimes we could observe them coming at us from quite a distance:

7. And other times they just appeared like ghosts from the forest:

8. But I NEVER felt threatened or afraid. We were on their turf and respected that. They would come closer if they wanted:

All images taken with the Canon R5 at ISO up to 10,000.

Thanks for having a look. Stay safe.

Wow beautiful stuff. I am very jealous your shots are amazing. What great experience to learn their behavioural habits over a period of time. I followed a family of Cooper Hawks from spring to summer this year and the learning of their behaviour was amazing, but this is a whole new level. Fantastic Henrik thanks for sharing.

Henrik,

Congratulations on the eight days you got to spend with the coastal wolves. What a fantastic thrill that had to have been. These images are beautiful, thank you for sharing them. It is amazing how they just seem to appear out of nowhere like you mentioned.

Well Done,
Greg

Thanks Dave And you're quite right - when you're able to put in the time, it's amazing what you can discover and observe. Don't think I have any shots of Cooper hawks but I'd sure like to.

Thanks Greg. One day I was sitting in the hide doing video of a great blue heron in the surf. Then all of a sudden a wolf appeared out of no where and I wasn't exactly ready for it. I might have said a few select words out loud. You just never know.

Great shots and great experience. It's been over 3 years since I spent time with the wolves at Hallo Bay and I still think of them everyday. Sounds like you've been bitten also

Amazing shots along with explanatory notes about your observations of the pack. I especially like your capture of the alpha male. He was definitely sending a message about who was boss! YGMV.
