I've been working on "getting my feet wet" while learning "keeping my powder dry" in my new to me kayak. I feel confident enough to carry some photo gear, but not the D500 yet, so I took my D7100 and Tamron 150-600 G2 with me. I've been using my D7100 as a landscape only camera since acquiring my D500 and had it set as such. About halfway through my trip yesterday, I finally had all the settings where they should have been. I did manage a few decent shots, but missed a ton of others. At least me and everything I packed came back dry!

Rob,

I am still scared of taking an accidental dip with toys. I admire your guts.
Really nice work.
Thank you for sharing.

Welcome to the kayak photo world. Confidence will come with practice. I take my 500mm f4 with me routinely. My gear is in a dry bag when getting in and out of the kayak, I figure that is the riskiest time. I don't go out in high wind/waves with camera gear, as there likely isn't anything to shoot anyway. I keep the gear protected while I paddle with a silicone impregnated water proof backpack cover and I keep some sham wow type cloths on the bottom of the boat to catch any drips

You can get insurance for your equipment that would cover it getting damaged or lost in the lake. I think I pay 2% of the insured replacement value as part of my business insurance.

I bought a hybrid kayak that is more stable that other types to reduce the chances of tipping. And use the dry bag when getting in and out as already mentioned. Where I kayak, I can leave the camera on dry land while I am getting in and then bring it on board further reducing the chances of it getting wet. I'm looking at building some sort of cradle with a water resistant cover that fits between my legs where the camera can rest while paddling to keep water off of it and out of my way when not needed.

I bought a used Native Ultimate 14.5 Tandem, which is also a hybrid, that converts easily to solo paddling. Super stable, a ton of room inside-a need as I am 6'-2", 240- and fairly easy to get in and out of. I used a large dry bag for the first two outings, but I have a waterproof roll-top duffle being delivered today. Should make everything easier. My main concern is boat wakes. It probably comes as no surprise, but it's amazing how unaware boaters are of their wakes-even in "no wake" zones. And how many look directly at you and fail to throttle back any at all.

I have an Ascend H10, 10 ft long, but where I kayak there is nothing the size of wakes to deal with. Are you photographing in the area of wakes, or is that just what you have to go through to get to the wildlife? I have my dry bag attached to a floating boat seat so that if by chance I do roll or it gets bounced out of the kayak, I have a chance of recovering it. The camera is in the bag any time I am moving from one location to another.

I was in a "no wake" zone all day Sunday, but in an area of high boat traffic. I only crossed the main channel to get to the more sheltered, marsh areas. But, as stated earlier, some "captains" have no concept of "no wake" or courtesy while overtaking or passing manual driven craft. There were a large number of kayakers and paddleboarders out, and several voiced the same concerns. Unfortunately, it's the only passage to a very productive area for wildlife photography.
