p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Pygmy and Prey

I've had these for 5 yrs and didn't want to deal with the noise from my old canon 7d. Going through old stuff with the extra time, covid, I found these and now I'm posting them. I was on this Northern Pygmy Owl, when it went to ground. I don't know if it just caught this rodent or if it was cached. Light was falling fast. You can see my shutter speeds and ISO. It was going to town on the rodent, looking up and all around as it consumed the rodent. The last image, it flew up to a limb with prey and looked around. The light was so low, I went to the pop up flash to get the image, hardly ever using flash before on a bird. I think this may be the last time I used a flash on a bird. Then it went into a small 15 ft. dense fir, which turned out to be a good move. As I was walking to my car, close by, I saw why it was so wary. A Barn Owl came through hunting right where the pygmy was. Thanks for looking.
Rex

Beauties Rex, even though they were taken with a stinkin' noisy 7D.

Outstanding series. Interesting to see the size of the prey relative to the owl.

Cheers,

George

Excellent set Rex. Did you have your flash on a bracket to avoid lighting up the retina? I hope you are getting out some as it's good for the mind

The low light condition render the pupils of the owl’s eyes large - I love it! You did a great job capturing those, Rex! For web presentation, noise levels do not matter much but again, a great noise reduction software will make it better.

Awesome behavioral shots of the bird. How tiny they when compared to rodent prey here. TFS

Rex,

I still have to see a pygmy owl up close and in person.

This came out real nice.

Thank you for sharing

Thanks much Morris. I just hit the pop up flash on the last image, as a last resort. I had to fix the red eyes. I'm getting out some. The smoke really tied us up for a few weeks.

Thank you Joshua. I had actually done some NR on these a few years ago and forgot about them. But recently tried different program.

Wonderful photos. Turned out amazingly well considering it was with a 7D (not even MII), high ISO and low shutter speeds. Well done!
