p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Lens foot replacement(s)

So, I was perusing DP Review’s forums when I happened upon this thread where a poster stated they dropped their D850 and their 500mm PF lens. Turns out the foot came loose from the lens. Seems they aren’t the only that had their foot come loose as shown in this Steve Perry Nikon 500 PF review video (5:45).

Anyway, seeing my Nikon 70-200 f2.8E FL uses the same foot design, I decided to look for a more permanent (screw in) solution in going with a Hejnar low-profile foot replacement (Product code H128). For those looking for the standard size in allowing to carry the lens by foot, the code is H129 as the low-profile foot sits too close to the lens to hand carry.

Anyway, I post this for those looking for alternate solutions to Nikon’s flimsy quick release foot design. And, yes, there are other solutions by for example Kirk, RRS, and others at various price points. I went Hejnar ($60 bucks) and that works for me. I chose low profile cause it allows me to keep the foot on without it getting in the way. YMMV 🙂

Yes- I did the same. I am very pleased with the Hejnar. No way to release the lens accidentally!

low profile it is. 0.45" clearance from top of plate to lens barrel. even my fingers aren't getting in there.

looks like it has the added QR attach hole added on since its original design.

excellent totally simple execution

Yeah, I can barely fit my fingers under it to reach the bottom focus button of the lens. So yeah, it's a tight fit and not made for carrying the lens by the handle.

And yes, it has the QD mount. It's also lightweight, and feels lighter than the original Nikon foot. Also think it's priced just right at $60 for the low profile, and $65 for the standard size.

And yes, the craftmanship is excellent.

The low profile looks great to me. A 70-200 doesn't need a handle like a 400/2.8 or similar.

I use the Hejnar foot for my 500pf. I believe there are two versions available. I have the earlier version which is tall enough to serve as a handle, and allows me to use it to carry the lens without difficulty.

original Nikon foot weight: 2.5oz
RRS replacement foot weight: 3.2oz
Hejnar replacement foot weight: 2.3oz

as to the mechanism for attachment to plate to body it is of a design that is relatively bomb proof

now i have always swapped over to the RRS foot assembly which uses essentially the same locking mechanism that supposedly failed on someone's 500PF. this required 2 failures to occur. actually 3 in reality.
- 1: the side clamping knob to be unscrewed which makes the plate assy loose enough for one to notice.
- 2: the unlock trigger being depressed to then allow it to slide off.
- 3: is unfortunately the real human factor. the usual and most denied. failure of the user to check their equipment before use. it's a simple operation to do that always increases the chance of success. a little thought before you do.

How does the Hejnar lock up on an RRS Lever Clamp?

If you're asking me, I can't say since I don't have any RRS products.

Yes no RRS products for me...they failed in the field. Hejnar has been great; less expensive as well.

Yes, I got the low profile foot for my Fuji 50-140mm. I got it because nobody else makes a replacement foot. But it's solid.
