p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A few Sonoran Desert Critters

Hey All... Just a few desert critters from our property in AZ. All taken with 7DMII, and or, 100-400L and 500L. Have always appreciated everyone's inspirational images and am looking forward to getting my hands on my ordered R5. Been seeing lots of great BIF results with it, and it almost seems like cheating. As always, C&Cs always welcome. Peter A.

Each is better than the previous. Were these taken during a cooler season?

Thanks Fred! We have many bobcat’s and I’ve been trying to image image the cubs, but moms don’t like them out and about in the daylight hours.

Thanks Morris! They were primarily taken in the late Spring, although have imaged the bobcats a number of times late in the day all through the Summer. We still continue to see Gila Monsters too, and many rattle snakes. Will post additional pics soon.

These are creatures that we don't get to see that often here, well, except for the red-tailed hawk. The Gila Monster looks like a mini Komodo Dragon; how large is it? Too bad there was something in front of the bobcat in the last image. Excellent set and thank you for sharing!

Thanks much Joshua, and appreciate all your comments! The Gila Monster was about 15 inches, 38cm, nose to end of tail. They are the only venomous lizard in the US, and are very interesting to observe. I’m pretty sure I can post a full body image of a bobcat too, so those pesky branches won’t be in the foreground.

The monster does it for me, I don't remember any shots of one before.

Agreed on the Monster, Mogul. They are a treat to see and even had a small 6 inch juvenile in my garage one night. Fortunately, they don’t move particularly fast, and was able to shoo it out with a broom.

As a side note, I worked at the San Diego Zoo in the herpetology house in high school. Got really familiar with the Gila monster & its cousin, the Mexican beaded lizard (the only true venomous lizards I believe) They don't have fangs but need to hold on with a death grip and grind the poison into the victim. They then store all the nourishment in their tail (sort of like a camel's hump).

That’s very good background info on the Gila Monster, and how cool that you worked at the San Diego zoo. Been there a couple of times over the years. I’ll be posting some of those fat tails in another short series.

Thank you Dave! They are certainly a beautiful cat and we are most fortunate to have quite a number of them here in the desert.
