p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Green Heron Family (part 2)

I went to this GH nest 7 or 8 times in a span of 4 days a few weeks ago. I was a bit late to the "party" as the chicks were almost fledging, wish I had known about the nest when they were younger. It was interesting to observe their behavior.

I didn't quite get to focus on their eyes in some of these shots because things were happening in split seconds, wish I had the Canon R5's bird's eye AF. Sorry, I am too lazy to resize so many pictures for FM direct uploading. They were all shot with the Sony A7RIV and the 200-600 in late afternoon. I like the back lit effect but it's challenging at times.

Thanks for viewing. C&C are always welcome and appreciated.

Another terrific set Douglas. I taught the Sony had animal AF.

Thank you Morris. The newer Sony bodies have animal eye AF which works on a lot of mammals. It could pick out eyes for stationary birds like GBH, ducks, geese, or even cardinals. I don't think it works well on birds in poor light and if they move around. Maybe a future firmware update?

Thank you. I would guess I was about 15' from them. The nest was in a tree that hangs over the water. The good thing is that tree has several bare branches where the chicks hung out sometimes to wait for food. The background is mostly trees on the other side of the pond so for the most part I could pretty clean background.

I'm learning the hard way that even at 600mm, you can't be far away and expect great results. This morning on a shoot, I was 50-60 feet away or more. Even on a prime 600mm, that's just too far away. I've got to get out more and practice more! Thanks again for showcasing your work. Very nice.

Another sweet set of images, Douglas! The lighting is really great on that and the green heron chicks are a riot. And I assume they are pretty loud, too, right?

Thank you. 600mm is short sometimes, especially for hummingbirds,. I also have an A9 but for these herons, I needed the A7RIV's resolution more than the superior AF and FPS of the A9.

Thank you very much, Joshua! I don't recall the chicks were loud, as a matter of fact, I don't remember hearing them making any noise when I was there.

Thank you for your kind words, Dave. I will remember to check out the nest earlier next year to catch a glimpse of the chicks when they are just fuzzy balls. I was told the same nest in that tree had been used in the last couple years.

Good set. Backlighting works fine in highlighting the “peach fuzz”.
