It's pretty amazing that a problem this serious remains unsolved after nine months. I think it's safe to say that by now Canon has attempted to fix it more than once without success. Looking around on the Internet it's obvious that many people have this lockup problem and other odd "rebooting" issues at very inconvenient times. Unless the camera build is extremely variable, it could be that all cameras have the issue but not everyone has shot enough using a combination of settings to encounter it. Nobody seems to know with certainty, perhaps including Canon.
I've been drooling over the Sony A1 since it came out, but with a bunch of Canon lenses including the 600 F/4, the Canon R5 could let me improve my AF hit rate for wildlife and extend the usefulness of my lens collection at a minimal cost relative to replacing the expensive telephotos with Sony equivalents. Because of that I had basically decided to get the R5, and already managed to get the Canon EF to RF lens adapter with that in mind. I had thought this issue was fixed but I guess I wasn't watching closely enough. So, now my plans are on hold and I'll muddle along with the equipment I've got until they decisively solve the issue or, eventually, I'll have to buy what works.

The good news is that if you are going to base your buying decisions purely on the negative feedback available around the web, you’re going to be saving a lot of money.
I’ve shot XX thousands of frames on the R5 over the last 10 months, in cool weather, hot weather, standing in a river, hiking in the desert, high frame rate in the heat, electronic shutter, efcs, full mechanical, single shot, one shot af, servo af, eye detect, spot af. I’ve also shot hours of video. I’ve shot using native and adapted glass.
No problems for me. I have no doubt that at some point I will experience a lockup, like I have on every other camera I have used, from the 6D, 5D III, to the A7III, A7rIII, and A7rIV.
Most problems with consistent lockups probably boil down to: poor cfexpress card (like sandisk), problem with adapter contacts, and finally, manufacturing defects on the R5 circuit board. There’s a possibility there is still some software issue that causes lockups, but I’m somewhat doubtful about that at this point.
Plenty of people on here and dpreview had their circuit boards replaced by Canon when sending in for a fix. Others posted and were advised to use a different CFExpress card and never came back. Some are still experiencing a problem. Some people with problems don’t send in their cameras to be fixed and only complain about it on message boards when it happens. Most others are just using their cameras.
This isn’t to say that some users aren’t experiencing an issue, but you have to understand that with such a large sample size on the internet, you’re going to find people with issues. And people without issues are unlikely to complain. As an example, see Ronny Olson with an A1 that needed to be replaced due to constant freezing https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1691241/8#15544284 or here’s another one with freezing during af tracking (fixed supposedly) https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1698047 and some more here https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4570429 still ongoing.
Meanwhile, the vast majority of A1 users on here, dpreview, and fb user groups are not talking about lockups at all, because they don’t experience them. Much like a handful of users complain about lockups on the R5, and the remainder don’t discuss it at all.
