Two strip boxes behind and on either side of subject, feathered. I asked my son to act "cool" and to look at one of his toys across the room. Had several shots, but this one was the best due to his expression.

Your son, his expression and the lighting are wonderful, Hodie! I would like see a little more separation of his hair, especially of the bun from the background. There is some there but I got the feeling the image would look better with highlighting the outline of the bun and it could be done in PP, it seems.

Great composition! Super lighting! Agree with Joshua. The "bun" is an iconic Samuari marking.

Thanks so much, Joshua. I agree with you. I did a little a PP to separate the hair, and I ended up captioning it with “samurai” after the fact, so I wasn’t placing enough emphasis on the separation at the time. Maybe I will go back and rework it a bit. Thanks again!

Beautiful portrait, and I agree with Joshua's recommendations.

Thank you! I went back to edit the photo and on my computer the hair is actually pretty separated from the background. However, I did apply a curves layer and lifted some of the shadows in the hair. For some reason, on mobile, the hair still looks quite dark. Any recommendations?

I saw the edit and it does look better already. If you want to lighten the actual bun and not only the outline of it, I would look for an area of his hair that has the same or very similar flow pattern as the bun and clone that onto the bun. Use a lower opacity and flow first to get the feel and you can increase it as needed later. One word of caution, make the difference subtle and look natural. Do not over do it, in other words. Have fun!

Thanks, good tip! I’ll keep that in mind. In hindsight, I’m thinking j should of had an additional hair light for this one. Appreciate all the feedback!

Nicely done with some atypical lighting.

The lighting has the backside even or slightly higher than the front, and with the dark area down the centerline, it almost looks like his face has been disjointed / separated from his head and pulled slightly forward. It almost looks like two halves ... put back together. Note: If you don't already see this, try reducing the size and watch it reveal a bit.

Not sure that I'm saying it very well, but it presents in a different way than lighting that typically as more directional falloff. It introduces some intrigue which someway goes along with the Samurai and very sideways look. Almost a Yin Yang kind of thing with the front / back lighting being so close to each other. Interesting.

I might look to feather the curves layer from the middle outward to see how that works with the bun and with the "split" person effect.
