p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Snake v yearling Green Heron

I watched this young green heron hunt for about 30 minutes at the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside NY. It's favorite place to hunt is on a pond that is crossed by the main trail about 6 feet from the parking lot.

-1 It's neck is surprisingly long and they are super fast

https://www.morrisaltman.com/img/s/v-10/p3950690254-6.jpg

-2 The snake spins as the neck recoils

https://www.morrisaltman.com/img/s/v-10/p3950690158-6.jpg

-3 The green heron finds I'ts mouth tied closed so it can't open it and toss the snake up to swallow it

https://www.morrisaltman.com/img/s/v-10/p3950690072-6.jpg

-4 Embarrassed, the green heron walks off in frustration while I watch

https://www.morrisaltman.com/img/s/v-10/p3950689997-6.jpg

-5 The pore heron looks so frustrated

https://www.morrisaltman.com/img/s/v-10/p3950689930-6.jpg

-6 I can hear the heron thinking "How can I eat with this thing wrapped around my beak?"

https://www.morrisaltman.com/img/s/v-10/p3950689875-6.jpg

-7 Minutes later the snake must have suffocated as it's hanging limp

https://www.morrisaltman.com/img/s/v-10/p3950689803-6.jpg

The green heron walked off into the the marsh and I assume ate the snake.

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Morris

Great documentation image-wise, Morris! At the end, the heron managed to get its meal.

Thank you Bob,

I used an X-T3 + Sigma 150-600 C for canon with a Fringer Pro II lens adapter

Interesting shots. Wonder if the heron (or other birds) know if the prey (snake) is poisonous?

Thank you,
Some birds are very smart so I would not be surprised.

Hehe - as long as your beak is a little shorter, it's more difficult to wrap around for your food
