Since the new Oly 100-400 and 150-400 Pro will also take TC's in addition to certain other Oly lenses, here is a thread for posting ONLY images taken with a TC on an Olympus lens.

ADDENDUM: Since many are most concerned with how well using a TC maintains sharpness, as opposed to upsizing, it would be more helpful to others if only images demonstrating sharpness were posted on this thread.

It would also be helpful if the number of images were kept to maximum of 3 or 4 per separate posting was adhered to. We don't need image overload on a thread that hopefully will get more than enough images by following that criteria.

The Mandarin Duck. Not terribly pleased with these, as I've had to do very aggressive NR because of the deep shadows, resulting in a significant loss of detail.

Something I have wanted to try out - these are all heavy crops. Gigapixel does a great job of uprezzing files and retaining - maybe even adding - some detail. How does cropping/uprezzing compare with using a TC? That is something I wanted to see for myself.

First shot was with the 300mm Pro. Then sharpen in Topaz Sharpen AI. Then heavy crop.

Second shot was with the 300mm Pro. Then uprez the file by 2x with Gigapixel. Sharpening was also applied in the uprez process. Then crop.

Third shot was the 300mm Pro plus 2xTC. Sharpen in Topaz Sharpen AI, then crop.

Moral of the story. It will be good to have the Oly 100-400 that takes TCs.

300mm no TC, sharpen, then crop

300mm no TC, sharpen plus uprez, then crop

300mm plus 2x TC, sharpen, then crop

The Topaz uprezzed image looks best. Iíve had mixed results with Gigapixel. Your original image has to be very sharp, and the fine detail must be there. If either of these are missing uprezzing on Gigapixel is no better than uprezzing in Photoshop.

I like the last image best, but it can't be compared to the top two images because it's a different shot. It would be helpful to post the same frame as the first two in the third image. I find that the third image looks much more natural and not oversharpened, in spite of being a different frame.

The 3rd shot has the least amount of detail because of the 2x TC. There are only 2 shots here ... the 1st one with the 300 bare lens ... and 2nd shot (3rd image) with the 2x TC. Obviously the 2 shots will not be exactly framed but they were clearly shot at the same time.

Hi Bobby. I am seeing a lot more detail in the 3rd shot. Look at how fine the feather detail is. Now that last shot could probably use some more sharpening, but the fine feather detail is there whereas the previous shots don't have it. At least that is what I see. For example, look at the fine hairs under the beak.

Can't do that. I had to swap on the 2x TC for the last shot. However, these were taken about 20 sec apart, same distance, same bird, etc...
IMO, the new Oly 100-400 lens is not exciting because it may or may not be sharper than the PL 100-400, it is exciting because it can take TCs. Now there have been a few posts which state that with the Sony 200-600mm the difference between cropping and uprezzing vs using a TC on that lens...is minimal. In other words, they claim that you might as well just crop vs. using the TC. That conclusion is probable erroneous, but the point of my post was to actually see how cropping/uprezzing looks compared with a TC. I see a lot more detail in the 2xTC photo, so I conclude that it will probably be beneficial to use TCs on the Oly 100-400, unless for some reason the lens is really, really bad with a TC. I don't think there is any reason to suspect that will be the case. I believe we can look forward to a FOV on that lens (plus TCs) that will yield some great shots.
