The Cock of the Rock is one of the most beautiful and striking birds in the neotropics, even though it is difficult to have it close for to get a good picture this is not a problem in Colombia. In the small town of Ciudad Jardín it is possible to photograph this bird only 3 meters or less away, without a doubt this is one of the best photographic experiences I have had.

Due to the pandemic, it was not possible to visit this place in 2020, but I have already confirmed 3 trips for 2021 and possibly 2 more, so I am looking forward to visiting this place again.

Jaw-dropping images of that bird, to say the least, Javier! I saw a few while in Ecuador but like you said they were really far away. Even using the crop mode at 1,200mm, resulting in an effective focal length of 1,800mm, it wasn’t enough to get meaningful images.

There are many scenarios and the light varies during the day. The last time I visited this place I spent 3 hours photographing this amazing species and managed to capture different images. I would like to have a full frame camera because the light sometimes is poor, but I hope to be able to buy one next year.

There are good places for to photograph this bird in Ecuador, I have a special place on each side of the Andes where you can take good photos. It is very frustrating to see this beautiful bird and not be able to get a good photo of it.

However, in Colombia it is very different, when I visited this place I was amazed, I counted more than 12 males jumping and singing just a couple of meters away.

Javier,
It also has to do with “luck” as another FMer that went to a place in Ecuador a few months before I did was able to get great images. Those birds landed fairly close to him. Not as close as your pictures show them but still... On the other hand, the shooting condition from the exact spot while there was pathetic. I understood that you could get fairly close to those birds at another place but it requires a strenuous hiking for a few hours. Though to do with the gear we carry

Hi Joshua,

It is always good to have a bit of "luck". For my tours I am always looking for new places that allow us to take better photos. In January of this year I found a new place in Mindo where you have to walk 15 minutes and you can be up to 8 meters away. In Baños city, I have another place where you have to walk 40 minutes, the path is not difficult and it is worth it.

This place in Colombia is extraordinary and has no comparison, I am organizing my trips for next year, if you want to join me it would be incredible.
