I tried a rectangular 77mm metal hood from Haoge. It does not cause corner vignetting, but it causes highlight bokeh balls to be cut from top and bottom. That looks.. distracting. I don't have large enough bags to haul the lens with the stock hood. I have to remove it when the lens is not on the camera, and the stock hood takes space of another lens I could bring with me.

Can you recommend any other hood for the lens? Thanks!

I never use the hood with this lens. I usually wear a ball cap, so if the lens I ever catches a glare, I just pull the hat off and block the he sun with it. Have you run into situations where you really need the hood?

For me, I need a hood every time I use a lens just to protect the front element. If it keeps out flare and increases contrast, that's just a bonus.

I use a small (2cm) 77mm screw-in metal hood. Not sure how effective it is, but it keeps the lens still relatively compact.
For front element protection, I prefer UV/clear filters...

This lens isn't subtle with the size of the front glass anyway, but the hood is ludicrous. I guess it has to be as large as necessary to serve a function, but you'd really have to need it in order to want to keep it on. I suspect a lot of people just use a filter on the front to protect the glass.

The lens hood doesn't bother me, I use it all the time, with no filter.

Thanks, I guess I'll just buy one of those cheap 2cm chinese made aftermarket hoods. Nikkor AF-D 85mm f/1.4 hood fits, but it is also large. HN-28 from 80-200/2.8 AF fits, but not sure if it vignettes since it's for a 2.8 lens.

Edit: I have bought a small cheap generic aftermarked screw-in hood. It works and I don't need to think about the hood anymore.

Brought another girl home, and my wife didn't complain. Day two and she has settled in pretty well

Any links to the hood?

I just got this hood for my lens. Very sleek and does the job. I like these slim slotted aluminum hoods, since in case of bumping it hard the hood should absorb the impact better than solid metal hoods. And it can take the 77mm lens cap as well. Easy to use.

On my June trip to Zakynthos where I shot with the lens I didn't have any hood with me and really didn't miss it otherwise than to protect the barrel and front element. This lens seems to handle flares like a champ.

Something like this. I bought mine from amazon.de for a much greater price because I didn't want to wait for two months.

Are the dark corners more of a sample variation issue? I’ve seen some photos where it doesn’t look present and others (non portrait) where it’s obvious. That’s the main thing keeping me from picking one up. Plus I have the 50mm f1.2 GM lens.

Could possibly be some people not having in camera corrections enabled.

I sold this lens when I swapped to Canon and now I’m back with Sony this lens was one of my first purchases! It arrived today so I can’t wait to put it to good use!

So I finally received my copy and AF is great, IQ and rendering seem nice considering the limited results I've been able to get. But does anybody else feel like the edge of the lens is sharp and digs into their fingers? I'm using an a7R III currently and if I fully wrap my hand around the grip, the edge of the 85 DG DN rubs against my fingers and is rather sharp, which ends up hurting after a while. Only used it a few days ago and I still have a mark on my knuckles.

Anyone else have this
...Show more

Got the Sigma 85 DC DN lens and really liked it but I had the same very tight fit issue on my A7RIV. Used it 15 minutes around the house and I had a slight cut on my middle finger's 1st knuckle. Comparing the Sigma to other larger lenses I own, the 35GM, 100-400GM and the 85 & 135mm Batis, Sigma has designed this lens with too short of a bell shaped area before it goes full width. It needed to be 6 or 8mm taller (like these others lenses) and when it does go full width there is a serrated cut aluminum ring that digs into my knuckle unfortunately. Yes I have larger hands and wear a large glove size, but none of my other lenses have a serrated cut edge at the area where the lens goes full width. And No I don't have fat fingers

Had to return it for this reason. It was just too uncomfortable to hand hold for me and as I like to carry my bodies via a PD wrist strap this would have been an ongoing issue.

Thanks Laveen. Yeah I don't use this lens as much as I should, but I love what I get from it.
