p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · X1D II Adapted Autofocus Lenses

I've read all of the threads on adapting manual and autofocus lenses to the X1D I/II, which mainly discuss whether there is sufficient sensor coverage. So, I'm creating this dedicated thread on generating a list of autofocus-compatibles lenses confirmed to work on the X1D II using the Techart TCX-01 EF-XCD adapter. As people post their experiences below, I will update this original post with the list of lenses with confirmed functioning autofocus. I'll also update the list of those not working. I'll also try to include hard/soft/no vignette notes, when available. Here are a few house keeping notes:

  1. When sharing your notes, please indicate whether your body is X1D I or II, the firmware for body and adapter, and perhaps if possible provide a straight out of camera example with no correction, or perhaps before and after correction.
  2. Before the 'you do realize' reminder is provided, it is understood that using adapted lenses (apart from certain HC/HCD mount lenses) limits use of the X1D I/II to the relatively slow-readout electronic shutter. All of the cons resulting from that are understood, so there is no need to restate this information here, as has been done in every single adapted lens thread I've read.
  3. Finally, it is understood that the best function and perhaps best performance comes from the use of native lenses. Again, no need to restate what is understood.

So, here is my limited list thus far, with latest firmware for the body, X1D II 50C Firmware Update 1.2.0, and for the adapter, Techart TCX-01 EF-XCD Firmware Update 4.0.0 for Mac and for Windows.

AUTOFOCUS WORKING

  1. Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM + X1D I/II: full aperture control, full autofocus, full sensor coverage w/ soft vignette
  2. Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II + X1D I/II: full aperture control, full autofocus, full sensor coverage w/ soft vignette
  3. Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM + X1D I: from what I've read, this is supposed to work on X1D I with full aperture control/autofocus/sensor coverage, but I wouldn't mind confirmation from someone here.
  4. Canon EF 135mm f/2L + X1D I/II: full aperture control, full autofocus, but slow on my X1D II, full sensor coverage w/ soft vignette

AUTOFOCUS NOT WORKING

  1. Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L + X1D II: full aperture control, no autofocus, soft vignette
  2. Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L + X1D II: full aperture control, no autofocus, slightly hard vignette
  3. Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM + X1D II: limited aperture control (could not get it to go below f/4 at any distance; not sure why), no autofocus, but full sensor coverage
  4. Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM + X1D II: no aperture control, no autofocus, hard vignette

Reserved for more 85mm

The combination of the X1D II + TCX-01 + 85/1.2L II was a pleasant surprise. Autofocus was fairly snappy, perhaps snappier than the 40/2.8 STM, and there appears to be full sensor coverage with very slight and manageable vignetting. Indeed, if you like a little vignette, you’ll be pleased with the combination straight out of camera, assuming all other settings are correct for the scene. I decided to rent the lens for the weekend to explore the combination more thoroughly, and will share images here.

Zeiss Apo Sonnar 135 on X1DII…
The focus wasn’t right but I see a great potential with this combo.

Oops, I just realized that this thread was for AF lenses….
