p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 3 Wings, 1 Rolling Shutter?

I saw a hummingbird in my yard at the bougainvillea blossoms and shot a couple of photos with my a7R4 and the 200-600G + 1.4x. This shot was nice and sharp, but as I looked closer, the hummingbird had grown another wing! It wasn't a mutant, a later shot showed the normal two wings per bird. I can only assume that the third wing is due to rolling shutter. I was using the electronic shutter so that there would be no shutter sounds to scare the bird away. I have seen rolling shutter with this camera before, but it has always been very obvious, whereas this third wing almost looks normal. I will shoot hummingbirds with the a9 in the future. Has anyone else seen added body parts due to rolling shutter?

Yes. I’ve got a bunch of shots with double wings of hummers and bees. Shot with A7RIV and Z50 both in e-shutter. You can use the A7RIV in mechanical and it works fine. The shutter is still fairly quiet and I was just doing so from 10ft away from a hummer a few mins ago and it didn’t scare it. However the A9 is the best option for many reasons especially with that lens.

Shirley, I have not seen that kind of effect as a result of the rolling shutter. But that's the only explanation for that effect as long as you are sure that the HB is not a mutant . The mechanical shutter noise in that camera is quite muted, especially if you use the EFCS mode. I have taken plenty of HB images using that mode and the shutter noise didn't bother them at all. But your best bet is indeed to use the A9.

Thanks, Geoff. It is good to know that other people have seen this strange phenomenon. I was surprised because, as I said, all of my previous rolling shutter photos were really obviously screwed up. This one is sort of naturalistic.

I think you're right, the a9 is the way to go.

Couple more in e-shutter with too slow of a sensor read...

Here is the completely disembodied wing from a different day.

I will be happy to see a global shutter in the next generation of mirrorless cameras.

It all depends on the camera and wing position how much effect you will get. A burst of 10 shots with the same settings can result in no visible effect or a drastic effect.

That's a good one, we should have a thread for the best rolling shutter photos!
