Nice set!

I just started looking at this thread and I really like what I'm seeing out of this lens.

Thanks! I actually sold the lens since those photos, but I recently bought a new one again during a sale. The lens worked great for our recent anniversary trip to MD.

Sorry to revive an old thread and ask a question that has likely been answered before, but I'm considering picking up this Tamron 28-200 to pair with my A7r3 as a landscape and general walk around lens. My question is, how is the hand-holdability of the lens with just the IBIS and no OSS? I'm new to Sony, so not super familiar with how much IBIS helps without the lens having built in OSS. When I was using my previous Canon 5D3, I usually used a lens with IS (such as the 24-105L) which obviously had no help from an IBIS system. Thank for any helpful info.

IBIS is especially effective at shorter FL’s and is less effective at longer FL’s since it does not incorporate yaw-axis correction. At 200mm, I find that it works quite well on the 28-200mm, although the added OS on my GM 70-200mm f2.8 II takes stabilization to the next level. I would not be very concerned about this and believe that the IBIS will provide the stabilizing performance you are looking for with this lens.

The stabilization is fine with my A1. It is a great lens for a walk around lens.

I walk and handhold with my A7C and the 28-200 all the time, the IBIS works fine enough you don't need the OSS. Even when doing landscape stuff there's a lot of times I just leave the tripod in the truck and handhold.

It doesn't work great at longer focal lengths. At least, I've noticed quite a few shots that I am taking in lower light would benefit from faster shutter speeds. Topaz Sharpen has become the best friend of this lens - I'm not joking. The difference in "handholdability" between this lens and the 70-200GM ii is pretty noticeable in my experience - and this is with a 24MP body.

It isn't that the IBIS doesn't work - it is just that above 85mm or so it isn't super effective.

Don't let that stop you from buying the lens, though. Overall size + performance + price combination can't be beat.

Based largely on this thread, I just got a 28-200 Tamron. What a delight !

No problems with image stabilization today, making hand-held test shots: no discernible motion at 100% size.

I completely agree. I also found a big difference when comparing with the GM 70-200mm f2.8 II at 200mm.

Without Topaz Image AI, I think I would sell this relatively slow lens, since I am boosting the ISO so much.

Could you please share the range of shutter speeds you're using, where the absence of OSS becomes noticeable ?

Quick cursory look - seems like ~1/50s with focal lengths ~100mm and higher. So anytime the focal length / shutter speed is > 2.
I seem to have much better results with similar focal lengths / shutter ratios with the 70-200GM ii.
