Sorry to revive an old thread and ask a question that has likely been answered before, but I'm considering picking up this Tamron 28-200 to pair with my A7r3 as a landscape and general walk around lens. My question is, how is the hand-holdability of the lens with just the IBIS and no OSS? I'm new to Sony, so not super familiar with how much IBIS helps without the lens having built in OSS. When I was using my previous Canon 5D3, I usually used a lens with IS (such as the 24-105L) which obviously had no help from an IBIS system. Thank for any helpful info. ...Show more →
It doesn't work great at longer focal lengths. At least, I've noticed quite a few shots that I am taking in lower light would benefit from faster shutter speeds. Topaz Sharpen has become the best friend of this lens - I'm not joking. The difference in "handholdability" between this lens and the 70-200GM ii is pretty noticeable in my experience - and this is with a 24MP body.
It isn't that the IBIS doesn't work - it is just that above 85mm or so it isn't super effective.
Don't let that stop you from buying the lens, though. Overall size + performance + price combination can't be beat.
