Mine arrived yesterday and I grabbed a few quick test shots mid-afternoon in our side garden. I like the size and feel of the lens so far.

Killer bokeh at 200mm.
Agreed, lens feels really good in not being too light nor too heavy.
I think zoom creep will be a long long way off and the lock button is there for when that day arrives.

I see this as a viable option for day hikes. Pair it with a 17-28/2.8 - or another large aperture wide angle - and you have your shots in the woods with poor light as well.

You're being way logical and I like it
Though for me, often I'd take the 28-200 but grab the Rokinon 18/2.8 for the ounces. Not that the 17-28 is heavy at all but you know us old folk and weight.

Love these - these are uncropped? If so, seems to focus about as close as my Ricoh GR3 - which I am generally very pleased with.

As soon as my 28-200 arrives (tomorrow or Monday) that's exactly the combination I plan to travel with, for the same reason. Here's hoping the Tamron lives up to the early indications.

I posted my own thread called "tamron zoom shootout" that shows landscape f8 crops of this lens vs others if anyone was wondering how it does at f8 and infinity (i did)

@MedicineMan404

Thanks for starting this thread.
Nice examples.

Been contemplating some equipment changes, and am considering the Tamron, which I wouldn't normally do.
Should be here today and hope to get some testing done over the next week or so.

This lens can't come soon enough, my copy arrives next week! I think this lens will be way more useful for me on multiple fronts. Too bad the pandemic cancelled all my video and event gigs I had lined up! Oh well, I'll just end up shooting lots of photos and videos of my kids!

Still interested but would like to see more overlap comparisons with the 28-75.

Woot we have so many adopters so early.
I was willing to experiment with yet another super zoom after many disappointments over the years.
So far pleased and having to keep myself in check....it really is a super zoom

We leave in a bit less than two weeks for 27 days out west. My Sony grouping is set with the 17-28, 28-200, and 200-600 but I'm still puzzling out what to carry for a possible Milky Way while out there. I dont know if Idaho and Montana are known for the stars like Utah and Idaho and Montana are out principle targets.
So far I'm boiled it down to the
FE 24/1.4
Rokin 18/2.8
Laowa 15/2
I'm not going to take all three but it's a hard decision. I will be taking the Ioptron Skyguider Pro though just to help prevent trailing.

Ha! No sooner than posting that did I realize the Tam 17-28 is certainly a viable Milky Way candidate eh!

I canít remember if it was you or someone else that mentioned a trip to Yellowstone and Glacier but Iíll assume those are the places your talking about . Both are wonderful for night skies and last time I was in Glacier a few years ago the National Park Service ran a night sky photography get together at Logon Pass.

Iíve noticed you mentioning this lens more than once. Is it that good?

I use the Samyang/Rokinon 24mm along with my Tamron 28-75mm (now replaced with the 28-200, hehe) and love it mostly for itsí size and snappy and very quiet AF. Itís decently sharp; but lacks in strong/pop contrast and is a little hazy lookin sometimes.
Iím actually on my 2nd Samyang 24mm now, only because I tried the Tamron OSD prime version of it briefly (super sharp; but hated the noisy and hunting OSD drive... as I shoot lots of video too).

Have you ever tried the Samyang/Rokinon 24mm??
If yes, how does it compare to the 18mm in terms of IQ, sharpness, etc.?

I have Rok/Sam 18, 24 and 45. To me they are all in the same league.
But honestly I've not used any of the three exhaustively.
My main reason for liking them all so much is size and weight.
I only shoot video when I hit the vid button by accident.

I also have sony fe 24, fe 55 and when weight is not an issue I grab them.
And I do with for an FE 18mm....was hoping for such over the released 20mm/1.8 G.

Use the tracker and 17-28 for skies and carry the 24/1.4 as a ďLookĒ lens. Done and done.

Iíd say itís similar at smaller apertures. The 18 is better at wider ones.

I have the 18 but I think I want to swap for the T20. Donít do any video and Iíd rather have a consistent look with the 28-75 or 28-200.

anyone who saw my tamron zoom shootout thread and my initial conclusion that the 28-200 was strong at the wide and long ends but weak in the middle... please look at page 3 of that thread where i test it against the apsc 18-135. I found that somehow my shots from today were WAAAY better for the 28-200. I no longer want anyone to write off this lens because they thought I said it was terrible from 35-100mm (i did before... but now I think I screwed something up last time). anyways, carry on and thanks for the great real world images

Those of you who have this lens now, can you comment please on the ergonomics of the zoom function. Twist vs the push / pull capability. Does the rotational zoom method operate as "most" zooms with clockwise to extend toward 200mm and counter clockwise back to 28mm? (unlike my new Sigma DG DN 24-70mm which I love but find that odd and just a little annoying).

How about the push / pull? Does it feel smooth? Back in the day with my old Minolta SRT 101 film camera, for the years that my boys were in little league, I was part of the board of the league and donated a lot of time going around to games shooting slide transparencies and trying to get good images of each kid at least at the plate, and pre-focussing on bases where I expected action to be sometimes for action shots. I always borrowed a Vivitar zoom from a friend when I was shooting those games. Then the keeper slides were played on a big screen up high from dissolve unit and two carousel projectors during our annual St. Patrick's Day dance / party. And given to each team at the year ending awards breakfast.

I LOVED the push / pull zoom on it which felt very smooth and robust. Plus it was manual focus from the same ring, which was Awesome. My own zooms weren't as nice and had two separate rings for zoom and for focus. Metal body on that lens. I know this Tamron lens is light with high tech plastics involved, but hopefully the push / pull function itself is very smooth and feels like it fits well and will hold up?

I like Dustin Abbottís reviews but he usually compares to more than one lens. I wish he had compared the Tamron to the Sony 24-105 or any lens besides one with relatively poor image quality (24-240).
