Pre-oder: Sigma 100-400/5-6.3 DG DN OS FE ($949!)
Sigma officially released the 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS lens and it's now available for pre-order for $949:

B&H Photo | Adorama

It has an array of low-dispersion glass that helps to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range, as well as realize accurate color and reduce flaring. Among other features, one of the most welcome will be the inclusion of optical image stabilization, which compensates for up to four stops of camera shake. This OS system can be used in conjunction with camera-based in-body image stabilization, too, for even more robust support to aid making sharp handheld images.

Features:
  1. As part of the Contemporary line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance between convenience and performance, and meshes a compact, lightweight build and versatile handling with notable optical attributes.

  2. Telephoto zoom is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, but can also work with APS-C models where it provides a 150-600mm equivalent focal length range.

  3. One F Low Dispersion (FLD) element and four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements markedly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy.

  4. Optical image stabilization compensates for up to four stops of camera shake to help realize sharp imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds.

  5. Integrated stepping motor realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance.

  6. At the 100mm end of the zoom range, a minimum focusing distance of 3.7' is available, and at the 400mm end, the minimum focusing distance is 5.2' with a maximum magnification of 1:4.1.

  7. Integrated AFL button can be programmed to adjust various shooting settings and the lens also features a focus limiter switch for faster focusing performance within certain distance ranges. There is a zoom lock switch to prevent the barrel from accidentally extended.

  8. Rounded 9-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

  9. Brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity and rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount's design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.

  10. Compatible with optional TS-111 Tripod Socket for working atop a tripod or monopod; the included PT-31 Protective Cover can be attached to the lens to maintain a seamless appearance if the tripod socket is not used.

Main Specifications:
  1. Focal Length 100 to 400mm
  2. Maximum Aperture f/5 to 6.3
  3. Minimum Aperture f/22 to 29
  4. Lens Mount Sony E
  5. Format Compatibility Full-Frame
  6. Angle of View 24.4° to 6.2°
  7. Minimum Focus Distance 3.61' / 1.1 m
  8. Maximum Magnification 0.24x
  9. Optical Design 22 Elements in 16 Groups
  10. Diaphragm Blades 9, Rounded
  11. Focus Type Autofocus
  12. Image Stabilization Yes
  13. Tripod Collar Removable and Rotating (Optional)

A new Sigma 100-400/5-6.3 DG DN OS FE is soon to be announced according to Sonyalpharumours. I suppose it will be in the Contemporary series, but SAR doesn’t say. There’s also no indication whether this is a completely new design from the bottom up or just a sort of bolt-on solution, like many of the Sigma Art FE lenses.

https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sigma-will-soon-announce-the-new-100-400mm-f5-6-3-dg-dn-os-fe-lens/

There’s no mention of TCs in the rumour.

I think it’s good to see competition in this lens segment as well. The DSLR version of this lens takes 67mm filters and weighs 1160 grams.

I hope it will be considerably cheaper than 100-400GM and not that far off optically (and closer to 1kg would be a plus as well ). I also hope this will be the last lens to complete my lineup .
I read on another site it is supposed to be "C" indeed...

It's rather interesting that this is a 5-6.3 instead of a 4.5-5.6 like the GM. I wonder what made Sigma decide on that. Did they feel like it was just best to convert their existing design?
And I think the question a lot of people have too, why release this before a 70-200? It's really quite confusing to me at least.

I was already interested in the SLR version having made a Greentoe offer for it. It would have been my first MC-11 supported lens. A built-in adapter version would be fine with me. F6.3 is fine. I like the Minolta 100-400mm F4.5-6.7, but native AF and Lens Compensation would be nice.

I believe the DN designation indicates it's not just a bolt-on solution.

Only their mirrorless specific lenses get the DN designation:
35 1.2
45 2.8
14-24 2.8
24-70 2.8

Hopefully it's like the 14-24, and a smaller/lighter/improved version of their DSLR offering.

I'm going to wait to see what Tamron brings to the table. The rumor on SAR is they are working on a 200-400 f4. I would prefer that to the newly rumored Sigma. But if the Tamron isn't up to standards then I'll be looking more seriously into the Sony 200-600 for wildlife. A 200-400 or 200-600 would compliment my Tamron 70-180 more so. We shall see.

I agree, didn’t come to consider the meaning of the DN designation when I wrote earlier.

Also I see on mirrorlessrumors that it will be announced in and L-mount version. Since the L-mount only has got contrast detection cameras, an updated focus mechanism better suited to mirrorless may be needed.

I'm also just confused as to what Sigma is trying to communicate to their potential customers. Do they want to continue their no compromise DG DN lineup with high quality optical designs for telephoto users or do they want to port their old designs to FE mount on their C lineup?
It's all a little bit hard to see what the general vision is from Sigma.

DG DN just means it's designed for mirrorless. (DG is designed for digital full frame, DN means mirrorless. DC is used when it's an APS-C designed lens) It doesn't have anything to do with 'no compromise'.

The 'classes' of lens are the A, C, S designations: Typically the Art series has been their high end glass, with Contemporary being their consumer focused line, though the optical quality has generally been quite good on the C glass. The Sports line is their fast aperture high end long glass.

So, "DG DN OS FE" means designed for full-frame mirrorless with optical stabilization, Sony E-Mount.

I was originally thinking about the future 70-200mm to complete my Sigma zoom trinity (14-24/24-70) but since I rarely do portraits and have primes for that, this could make a lot more sense for wildlife photography while hiking. I regretted replacing the 100-400mm with the 200-600mm as it's definitely more of a use on a gimbal + tripod sort of lens than carry for walking around.

I also don't want to drop another $2k on the 100-400mm with so much overlap in usage but something in the $1k price range could definitely be interesting.

Have been eyeing the Sony 100-400 GM for it's beautiful rendering to replace my CZ 100-300, so my ears are definitely perked. I like Sigma colors and contrast much more than Tamron, so I'm listening.

Me, too. Especially since the Sigma EF version goes for less than $500 used.

I worry a little bit that if you want to use the old one, f6.3 is a bit dim for adapted AF to work.

The entirely new one will presumably be fine on the AF front, and likely optically better too.
If it's nice and compact, it could be a great lens for someone who occasionally wants longer focal lehths, and would never travel with a substantial tele prime or zoom.

Yeah, probably. My main interest would be hiking landscape, where AF isn't really a concern for me. I enjoyed my 75-300 on μ43 in the British Colomia coastal range and have been iching to find something that could fill that space.

Why do you think that?

The MC-11 doesn't present the lens as adapted. It focused fine at 400mm inside the store where I tried it with my A7II. It is not a fast focusing lens, but the camera wasn't struggling with it.

The A9, A7III and RIV phase-detect points work down to f/11. The II, RII, and RIII down to f/8 with native or adapted lenses. Sony is selling several F6.3 zooms now.

Funny, just bought EF version of ebay from AU, I've been waiting over 6weeks now for it to arrive (covid delays in mail delivery), should get it tomorrow...

:-)

I think it only because my MC-11 seems to focus less well with slow lenses, with a bigger differential than with native lenses
.
It may just be that the lower the light, the less decisive the signals, so the more important it is that the focus motors move rapidly and precisely in the way that they won't (especially precisely) on older lenses, rather than specific to the adapter.
