Dunno about most famous. There's a couple images I'd consider more famous regardless, all news photos naturally.
The XP background is the most recognizable photo most certainly.
Same as music, the record-holder for most recognizable bit of music is the opening bars to the Rolling Stones 'Can't get no (satisfaction)'. I certainly wouldn't call it the most famous song of all time, but it's so recognizable so quickly that it gets the nod for that instead.
